How much can you do on your tracks or how much DO you do on your tracks without listening?

Everyone's always banging on about using spectral anlaysers to see what frequencies you're hitting at so got me to thinking how much you can actually program without hearing what you're doing?

Obviously not a good idea as you cant hear it but sometimes I program percussion parts or create white noise sweeps and program other riser effects etc that I know roughly what they're gonna sound like.

Ideas on the back of a post card please to the usual address:teef:

so im trying to produce some techno stuff at the moment.

my question is of course about the tune above.
it's a constant loop changing a bit every other bar.
but why does it sound so full? are that just the many hihat / percussion or is there also
some kind of subtle pad/key going.
whenever i make a loop it sounds so empty even with alot of percussion.
and wenn i try to make a subtle filling pad/key in the background it tends to sound like shit.

any advice / tips would be highly appreciated

Adam A5X Review

Hey guys,

Long time no post.

Been out of the game for a couple of years now but recently...

Hey guys,

Long time no post.

Been out of the game for a couple of years now but recently had the urge to make some hip hop beats, so I went out and got some new monitors.

I'm hoping that this thread will help people out there considering the A3X / A5X / A7X scenario.

It's probably worth noting that I have previously owned a pair of Adam A7's, which I adored, so hopefully this review won't be too biased ;)

I went to my (not so) local audio store and compared the A3X / A5X / A7X.

Never before have I heard such amazing sound come out of such small boxes.

As I'm writing this, I'm finding it very difficult to think of the differences I want to convey, as each model had that quintessential "Adam lushness" yet, they each sounded very different at the same time.

The A3X definitely had the thinnest sound, this was no great surprise. Top end was beautiful, very clear, detailed, transients, yet I couldn't really hear or feel any bass at all. This is possibly a bone of contention as, in all the reviews I read, prior to listening, loads of Adam fanboys were noting a "hyped" low end response.

I must admit, I did not find this to be the case at all.

Having said that, I would still highly recommend the A3X to anyone on a budget. Stunning detail for the price. Everything was well separated and defined, just a thinner sound overall compared with what I'm used to.

Next up, the A5X. This is what I actually settled for in the end. They have (some of) the bottom end that the A3X monitors lack. Their stereo image is so wide and I find different instruments and percussion lines so well defined it scares me!

Bottom end is no HR824 but for the size of the cone, I can't believe how low and especially how clean the bass response is. If anything, I would consider the A5X bass to be "hyped" somewhat, not the A3X.

This is no drama either, as the A5X comes equipped with low / hi shelf and tweeter adjustments on the back of each unit, at the moment I've got them all set to standard position.

The A7X sounded by far the best of them all, significantly better than the A5X. I would love to own them. They were so wholesome, round and full! Compared to my original A7's, they have a far better low end response and, to tell you the truth, I don't really know what the other differences were but they just sounded more whole. Due to the dimensional confines of my room, I felt they were unsuitable.

As it stands, I'm only 2 days into listening to these speakers, so I guess the best is yet to come!

I am planning to add a sub to this setup (Sub 7 most probably) in due course. Will let you guys know how it goes!

Big thumbs up for A5X.

- Ric
