KOKESHI

DJ Alley Cat has been an active member within the music community over some 12+ years thanks to not only her own work as a DJ/producers as also as the co-director of ESP Agency as the former manager and A&R of Skunkrock Productions. Over the year she not only commissioned tracks and remixes from the likes of Konflict, Klute, Calibre, and Total Science, but was also among the first to sign tracks from artist such as Beta 2 and Zero Tolerance.

With years of experience behind her, Alley Cat has now stepped up to the plate to form her own label, Kokeshi. The press release we received promises, and we quote, "a culmination of many inspirations. The deeper sounds are finally getting due recognition and, at the moment, dubstep and Drum & Bass are the primary musical themes featured on Kokeshi... but this label isn't limiting itself".

With a slew of releases already lined up from some solid up and comers � Kokeshi has things planned with Cardiff's own Lung, a mere 18 years of age, as well as Kiat, hailing from Singapore and with releases on Rufige - we are keen to see what Alley Cat has up her sleeve for the rest of 2009 and after.

Released on the Airvent Media label, this impressive example of modern electronica production is one of those increasingly rare appearances of a contemporary IDM record, and what's more this is a particularly good one, evoking the sort of layered granular palettes you'd associate with late-period Arovane, alongside the sort of ambitious, Autechre-influenced beat designs you'd expect from a release within this genre. 'Glue Ear' fuses a muted synth pad melody against a system of springy, clockwork-sounding drum rolls and heavily panned, smashed up rhythmic manipulations, while 'A23' journeys towards greater abstraction, opting for more experimental, texture-based composition. Fans of the genre are bound to find a lot to love in Arctic Sunrise, but there's still enough here to get unbelievers excited too (check out the glistening tones of 'Cutting' for some great digital ambience). Recommended.

Mary Anne Hobbs described this record as "music for assembly line robots" so if you're one of those, read on with interest. This is in fact a limited edition 7" release by Ashley Brown's Arctic Sunrise project (see also the At Present Delayed CD EP also listed this week), and explores the same sort of jittery, state of the art post-IDM programming that continues from where the likes of Squarepusher - or even the likes of Phonem and Einoma - have previously found success. Not the most fashionable music in the world perhaps, but those with open minds and cleaned out ears will find plenty of detail and craftsmanship in this stuff.
