![]() DOA: We first got a whiff of what you guys were all about in 2009, but you two linked up back in 2003, right? How did you guys meet, and how did your similar interests manifest themselves into producing DnB together? Ulterior Motive: We first met through mutual friends due to a house share back in 2001. Our similar music taste soon became apparent, in and out of Drum & Bass, so we decided to write something together in the studio. That worked out really well and we became good friends, spending all our time writing beats together and DJing as Ulterior Motive. In 2003 we moved away from each other for a couple of years until meeting back up in 2005/6. Over those two years we pushed our individual styles in different directions and because of that, a new sound developed when we returned to the studio together which eventually matured into the Ulterior Motive sound. DOA: Seems like you guys had luck on your side, or had some serious contacts, seeing as you've been immediately linked with the likes of Teebee and Sabre[/b, with praise coming from [b]Grooverider, Metalheadz and Kasra Critical as well. When did you first know that your work had been taken seriously and you were more than just "another production outfit"? Ulterior Motive: As we mentioned above, we'd been making music for a long time before we linked with Teebee, but it was a conscious effort on our behalf to wait until we were happy and confident that our music was strong enough to send out knowing that it's all too easy to fall into that "another production outfit:" trap, as you described. We bought our Mackie monitors from Chris Blu Mar Ten after replying to a thread on DOA where he was advertising them for sale. We then became friends chatting on and off on AIM and eventually sent him some of our stuff. He was really in it and cut some dubs – that really gave us the confidence to start sending some bits out there to the likes of Teebee, so we have him to thank for that. In fact, it was Chris that sent the first tunes of ours to Teebee without us knowing. None of those bits got signed but a year later we sent "Infrasonic" / "Holding On To Never" blind over to him and he got back to us saying he loved them - this was the first time we even spoke to Teebee. From there Teebee has been really encouraging but his standards are high so he's always pushing us to further our skills... can be testing at times, but it's paying off and we thank him for that. As far as getting support from the likes of Metalheadz, Grooverider, Sabre, Kasra etc, no one was as surprised as us! Paul Jubei has been a huge support for us spreading the word through to other people in the scene we can't reach down here in Bournemouth, we'd also like to extend a massive thank you to FD as he's linked us with so many good contacts. DOA: Speaking of Teebee, he just recently relaunched his Subtitles Music imprint, and the first two singles come from you two. How does it feel to be held in that light, essentially ushering in the next phase of Teebee's vision for the label? Ulterior Motive: It's pretty amazing for us, Subtitles has always been a massive influence to us and takes up a big part of what we play. The re-launch will see Subtitles back on top of its game - there are some very strong releases in the pipeline so watch out for them. DOA: You guys have also done some collaborations, which span from the sampler for Sabre's album to work with Zero T, Jubei, Rockwell and FD. Any word on when some of these bits are going to be released? Ulterior Motive: Our collab with Sabre, "Barefoot", has been out for a while now. The Zero T collab, "Breach", is forthcoming on Subtitles backed with Zero T's tune "Harms Way" - that's penciled in for the next release after "2098", we believe. The collabs with Jubei and FD are due out on Metalheadz later this year: "All That We Are" (with FD) will feature on the Genesis 2 EP, with "Tevatron" and "Snoretooth" will be on the Jubei's Collaborations EP. The Rockwell piece is still work in progress, but is shaping up nicely. DOA: Do you guys have any plans for EP or album length projects? Are we speaking too soon? Ulterior Motive: We will eventually do an album for Subtitles, but we aren't ready to start that just yet, we both feel our first album has to be something special, so watch this space!!! DOA: OK - if you had to pick one tune that defined the U.M. sound, so far, which would it be and why? Ulterior Motive: It's hard to say because our opinion changes from day to day!! We're never 100% happy with any tune we finish but right now I'd say "2098" – it's got a lot of what we like in Drum & Bass... funky rolling dark and organic. ![]() DOA: With guys like dBridge and Ed Rush singing your praises, especially when it comes to the feeling that you guys are running with the torch that they lit, are there any other newer producers out there that you feel share the same spotlight with you? Ulterior Motive: We're completely humbled by the fact that some of the names that got us into Drum & Bass are now playing our music and supporting our works. As for as other new producers out there right now, we're playing a lot of Rockwell (is he still new?), FD, Hybris, DLR & Octane – there's a lot of good new music around right now. DOA: You two were gracious to hit DOA off with an exclusive mix – what can we expect from this set? Ulterior Motive: Basically what you'd hear from us in a club - we've tried to include a lot of new music that we're feeling at the moment, also sneaking in some of our old favorites from over the years. DOA: Any shouts or final thoughts before we dip into this? Ulterior Motive: Our two singles ("2098" / "Yogurt Brainwave" and "Featherweight" / "Glued") are both out now on Subtitles UK. Final thought... bring back Konflict! Ulterior Motive: Top 10
