![]() DOA: We know about Secret Society via the tracks you've released on Backlash, J-Tek and Digilab. When did you guys first get involved in making music? Ollie: I started DJing when I was thirteen back in 1994; both my older brothers we're heavily involved in the scene and I just carried on the tradition. I started producing in 1999 with early releases under the name Faze on hyper Records and other labels. Tommie: I first started DJing in the early 90's and, along with my older brother Modular, started getting into the production side of things. We released over 30 tracks on lots of labels (from Flex Records to Hardleaders), under various guises, and ran a number of labels ourselves, the most famous being Lab Logic. I then got a little frustrated with the scene and, if I'm honest, bored of making the same music, so I worked on lots of different album projects. These ranged from concept albums with poets to full on Hip-Hop albums with Swampfoot. I also started producing and performing with live bands. I decided to get back into dance production when we formed Secret Society a couple of years back because the scene is more eclectic and open to new ideas now. And importantly to me differing BPMs in nights and even sets are becoming accepted, which really opens things up and gets me excited about what we can do! DOA: You two have been known as a production outfit for the last three years – when did the idea of New World Ordio come into play? Secret Society: We started Digilab Records when we formed as Secret Society, as platform for our own music and as a way to raise our profile in scene, without having to conform to any style as such. It was a way for us to experiment with ideas and really find out where we wanted to go with our music. Also, through networking and releasing other people's tunes, we have now developed a strong group of artists to work with who share our tastes and vision. We were going to release "Let Us Think" on Digilab, but once the video was finished and we got the remixes back, we felt that we now really understood the direction we wanted to go and wanted to start something new to support this. We teamed up with Aman-Shah Andrew from MNC design who has done, and is doing a great job on the branding and videos. We also received a lot of good music from various artists and through a combination of the above NWO was born.
DOA: Why "New World Ordio"? Secret Society: Let's just say we watch a lot of alternative media... a new sound for a new world, haha. DOA: One of the ideas that we see New World Ordio bringing together seems to be bridging the ever-changing fields of underground music and technology. How does NWO plan on keeping that consistency, and essentially being on the pulse of the evolution of the music, as well as the tech that provides it? Secret Society: Keeping on the pulse of the music is what has kept us interested in this genre for so many years. Trying to create a new sound, finding a new track for our label or hearing new beats in a club is what keeps us going. I think there is a definite shift in the last few years where people are starting to except different BPMs and styles in a set or in the same room on the same night and that's what we're all about, we'll release and make music of all styles as long we're feeling it and it's deep. Also you've got to have fun making music and enjoy it; being regimented and sticking to a formula would just bore us to death, and I think most other producers would say the same. We are always hunting new plug-ins to use and try different DAWs to see what they're capable of. Though keeping up to speed with the tech is important, focusing on how we create each project, in terms of style, sound and BPM is more so. We are at a time when it's all there in most software packages, you've just gotta learn how to do it. Sometimes changing software all the time for changes sake can be counterproductive. Our focus is music first, technology second, though the things we are doing visually are pretty innovative and keep the whole vibe of the label quite futuristic. DOA: The first release, the "Let Us Think" EP, features yourselves alongside Outrage and the beautiful vocals of Kirsty Hawkshaw. How did this pairing come to be? Secret Society: We have been friends with Outrage for many years, Tommie worked with him on his first tune back in the late 90's. After we released "Tabla Jam" on Backlash, we arranged a studio session in Lincoln with him and once Sean South had written the live parts and they we're recorded it was crying out for a vocal. Luckily enough, Outrage is good friends with Kirsty and she heard the instrumental, loved it and got involved. To have an artist like Kirsty on our first release is a big moment for our label, she was massive with Opus III and has worked with top artists like Paradox, Seba, Tiesto, BT and Orbital. We're both looking forward to working with her again the near future. DOA: We also know that you guys sorted out remixes from Sinistarr, Gremlinz and Journey In2 Madness. How did you guys go about choosing these particular artists to remix the debut NWO release? Secret Society: JI2M is a close friend who we have worked with for while, he is also one of our favourite Dubstep producers at the moment, so it was always going to be the case that he got involved. Regarding Gremlinz & Sinistarr, they are both artists that we have been into for a long time and with the release being a little leftfield, we wanted some straight-up dancefloor versions as well, they certainly delivered. Thankfully they both really liked the project and agreed to get on board. We will definitely be looking to get more music from them in the future. DOA: This mix takes us through a number of sounds, featuring a load of forward-thinking producers. What’s the release schedule for NWO looking like? Secret Society: "Let Us Think" (NWORD001) is available from July 1st on CD (from NWO Store) and digital download. NWORD002 ("Troubled Times") will be available around 8 weeks later, featuring Digital & Outrage, Modular, Kjell and Cuelock. We are currently in the studio working on more music for the label and we also have some big remixes lined up, but that's about all we can say at the minute. What we can say is expect more dancing robots and even a dancing JFK! Also look out for some big news relating to J-Tek Records involving Secret Society!!! ![]() DOA: What are some of the ideas for the CD/sample pack/app portions of the NWO movement? Secret Society: The first NWO Reverb Plug-in is in development as we speak which is very exciting for us. MNC are also looking into creating a smart phone app for us, but it is very hard to find a concept for an app which hasn't already been done, so we're not going to rush this one. The Store will open in July and NWORD001 CDs and t-shirts will be available, then we will look to add the sample packs (created by the artists on the label) and the other items at a later date. Really, we are just gadget freaks who think it would pretty sick to use your own plug-in in your music or an app you've created on your iPhone. It's 2011 after all! DOA: Are there any artists or influences that you’d say are reflected in the sound and direction of the imprint? Secret Society: Yeah we respect any artist in any genre that push the boundaries and raise the bar for the rest of us. Technology is a big influence because it changes so quick nowadays and we like to adapt our sound a lot through trying different bits of kit. Our past influences include Hip-Hop, DnB/Jungle, Soul, funk and alternative rock / Electronica. We certainly don't want to name drop as they're far too many to mention. DOA: What are some of the ways fans can get involved with NWO via the various social networking sites out there?? Secret Society: Join us on our brand new Facebook & Twitter pages. When we get to 500 likes / followers we'll be giving away a free download to everyone and we will pull 10 names from the list who will all receive signed limited edition CDs! DOA: Before we get into this mix, do you have any shouts? Secret Society: We would like to send shouts and thanks to Lucy, Louise, Sean South, Outrage, Modular, Kirsty Hawkshaw, Lost Souls and all the NWO artists , MNC for the great work and all people supporting us!
