How to get the Calyx/Teebee/nuero flow bass
Hey dogs. Figured something out in ableton today. This is my attempt at the morphing flowing basslines of calyx and teebee. After weeks of experimenting with foley basses and various reeses, I'm finally getting closer :D

An example of what ive been going for

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ExhvZBITU64

Calyx's Get my self to you . the bassline this track is pretty damn awesome. In my opinion it uses several different bass patches (a plain saw reese, a notched stab and a reese with a band pass filter), this is then processed by additional filtering and distortion. the patches are faded through eachother throughout the bassline.

So... this is how i acheieved a similar sense of flow between stabs/reeses and such in ableton (could be used in other daws but i have no idea).

1. I created a Instrument rack, with 3 chains (a synth in each; a reese, a chord stab and another reese, with different processing)
2. set up the chain selector so the stab is on section 1, the first reese is on section 2-127 fading out, and the second reese from 2-127 fading in.
3. bind a macro to the chain selector (and any other macros you might want, filter cutoff and such)
4. write a catchy 4 bar melody, and then automate the macros until pleased.
5. compress/limit/distort until it sounds reasonably glued together.

Just an idea. Combining this with foley bass would probably end up with phace/misanthrop styled stuff.

preview.

The fading between sounds really messes with your head when listening to it right? In a good way I mean.
I love calyx/teebee basslines and have tried making em a lot of times. Never got close but in the ballpark at least.
With this kind of bassline I like to start with making a riff with only sub/subs first, but its more of an workflow issue.

btw, this "foley bass" thing is really starting to annoy me. Its a incorrect use of the term (name) foley.
Foley is live "sound design" performed to a movie screen. In other words footsteps, clothing and related sounds that is time consuming and does not sound right when placed there by hand with a DAW.
"Found" sounds that is used in sound design is just sound design, nothing else. Thats how sound design started in the first place, with found sounds.
/Rant over. Sorry OP

Fair enough, it is indeed just sound design, but really foley is what the sorts of sounds have been labeled. I feel that it is more the concept of recording sounds to replicate others (stretching plastic to lion growl).

And thanks for the sub tip, i've always added sub last (because i can barely hear it with my monitors or headset), but i guess i could try writing it an octave higher (audible) then lower it later.

Another tip, In NI massive, try using every single part of the synth at once (as many macros as possible, envelopes on everything and light use of lfos), insane amounts of movement :D. Free patch http://www.mediafire.com/?5n5rn7b377i11yv

If you feel that way its fine. And its true that in many soundbanks footsteps, clothing sounds and others are categorized as foley. Still, the "term" is used wrong. Ever heard of Jack Foley? the worlds first foley artist. I can assure you that he didnt do any soundediting in his entire life.

Yeah not hearing the notes is quite a problem Actually I have a simple sawwave or something playing with the sub, giving some harmonics so I can hear what im doing. I just dont do any modulations exept maybe pitch and volume. Probably should have mentioned that. I feel like im fumbling in the dark with modulations if I dont have a riff first, but thats just me.

Uploaded some audio samples

http://soundcloud.com/tommerry11/fadey-bass-preview-sc

1. Amen and worm cutups , and 3 seperate basslines faded through eachother.
2. Some compressed beat i made and the bassline was made from a kick drum granulized and 2 other synths faded through.
3. Some break i processed and a single synth with macro automation.

Really awful (bwahaha that amen), and definately dont really sound anything like calyx and teebee, but they do have a similar morphing to them. I'm not in a conditioned room (or have studio monitors where i am for that matter), so this is definately not mixed very well. When i get back to my main setup/studio thingo, ill provide a much better example.
