6 Synthesizing pads

What are your tips and tricks when it comes to synthesizing pads? How do you make them big and airy? What effects, what filters, what modulations, what envelope settings etc etc. Let's share.

I use one or two main sound sources, that can be almost anything; an analog string, a pitched down instrument, etc (Atmosphere is a great source of sounds, yes). To this I add some sampled ambience from an airport or similar.
On top of this I usually put a randomly arpeggiated sort of "clinky" or metallic sound, like a cymbal or a metallic FM sound, very much in the background. I find this adds some life.
Filter with an automated/envelope HP or BP filter. Just make the envelope/automation real slow and swirly. Try automating the resonance, for squelches and stuff.

Effects: Big reverb, long delay, chorus/flanger.

Seen. Some good ideas. The arpeggeated sounds over an atmo is tight.

Just expanding on your string idea.... Take your string sample and put a slow attack and a long release. This makes the notes blend real well into a big smooth mass. Cranking the pitch bend helps too. You mentioned automated filters on the metalic sounds, that can work well with the string part also. Real easy and effective.

Ok, some general braindumping on pad building:

Long attack and release in envelopes

Cut frequencies in the bass region unless you are really after a bass pad of some sort

Evolving sounds, using different LFOs or envelopes (multi-stage envelopes rock)

Utilize the stereo field - movement is nice!

Comb filters are your friend for chorus effects and can also help making the sound BIG in the stereo space, at least if you have two different comb filters on the left and right channel (for instance in your Waldorf microQ)

Sample ambiences from places and add them, just as miklo said

Reverb is always good!

Delay is also good, especially with a lot of feedback and filtering on the feedback loop (aka the tape delay sound). Make the delay feedback bounce around the stereo field too for extra space and movement.

Layer different sounds. Layer effected sounds (like flanger, phaser or chorus) with dry versions of the same sound for nice new combinations.

Well, that's some things that came to mind.

one of my favorites is to find really cack old 80's casio keyboards.. some different electric organ sounds with the right type of overdrive.. (clean valve style) and chorus effect it can sound gourgeos.. it's nice to play a chord pattern thru this and then reverse it , the reversed aftertouch decay biz makes it slide between chords in quiet a tripped out way, I use that to get me started on a tune quite a lot eaven if it doesn't end up in there..

the Juno 106 can make nice spacey pads..

The Fender Rhodes sound is an obvious thing to play about with.

my big secret to moving and strange pads: spectral convolution.

lots of tools to do so, lots of them difficult. there are few ready to go plugs that do this... on mac max/msp and/or supercollider..
on pc soundforge's accoustic mirror (limitations), or CDE, or the range of plugs by delaydots.com

take a nice string sample or synth, convovle it was a women talking..

That could be really interesting if you get real anal with specrum analyzers to get a good combination... Convolution <=> Spectrum multiplication... Gotta try it sometime. Most EMUs can do that, right?

High resonance on filters combined with heavy delay can give some tripping sizzling effects when the filters are sweeped on pad sounds.

About the convolution, I tried playing around with the Acoustic Mirror the other day but couldn't really make it do what I thought it would. I used a recorded voice and a sample of a reverb tail and I thought I was gonna get a reverbed voice, but the result was just mushy and sounded like a strange mix of the two - was I doing wrong or just expecting the wrong result?

Probably a bit of both...
How did you make the reverb tail? It should theoretically be the result of just a one sample impulse input.

1.Compile a whole heap of random sounds,

2. Apply a big fat Reverb. Turn off the early reflections, Set the Reverb Time to Maximum, and set the other reverb perameters so that the Verb is dense & solid & Smooth, not scattered & Light & Airy. Eq the verb to get that bad Reverb high frequency hiss that sound cheap.

3. Add slight modulation to taste, be it a light phaser, or something like the Logic Audio Stereo Spreader, which for example can pan your higher frequencies to the left, and lower ones to the right. This really helps to give the pad movement- keeps it alive.

4. If your pad is not alive enough already, add a slight delay to one side (Left or Right whatever). I use values between 20ms and 50 ms. This again helps the stereo image of ur pad, and keeps it in the air somewhere, not right in the centre of your speakers where your kick belongs and your Pads don't.

5. Record It.... Load it into your sampler. Apply envelopes, slow release, medium attack.

6. Drink some beer or whatever.

I just wrote quite a long description of how I built my pad sound in the Long Dawn track and I thought I'd share it here too.

The pad I built in Absynth is made up mainly by six detuned saw oscillators, then all run through filters (bandpass with low Q if I remember correctly) that are at around the same frequencies, but not quite (centered at 1000 Hz, 1500 Hz and 2000 Hz I think they were). Then it all runs through a slight waveshaper (sine waveform, or even triangle, doesn't affect the sound too much, just a tad bit) and goes on to a highly resonant lowpass filter. After that I used the wonderful Pipe effect in Absynth and automated the parameters of that one with LFOs.

After that it's just a matter of drawing envelopes for all kind of parameters - this is the strength of Absynth as a pad machine - slight drifting of pitch of some oscillators, rising pitch at attack and falling pitch at release on some oscillators, filters opening and varying, long amp attack and release and so on. Just experiment and remember to use all LFOs as well. Then you end up with a nice sound you go to the MIDI programming part of Absynth and connect some controller (I chose CC1 (Modulation Wheel) and let it control some nice parameters in nice amounts - in my sound it controls the lowpass filter cutoff as well as maybe one of the bandpass filters for some movement, also it controls FM index/balance and maybe also another parameter which I can't remember right now (writing this from memory ).

I should add also that I added some sine modulation of oscillator 1 with a multiplier of 4 and automated it with the LFOs as well (or maybe with CC1, I am not entirely sure, maybe this is the parameter I was forgetting the previous paragraph ).

Finally, automate panning with LFOs and you've got a nice moving sound!

In the sequencer I automated a long sweep with CC1 to open up the pad slowly over something like 64 bars, and then closing it slowly again - this makes for interesting resonant peaks and squeals along the way.

Also I should mention that during the whole track the Absynth pad is layered with a pitched-down sample from an industrial plant for extra texture and ambience.

Finally, I added the obvious stereo reverb and stereo delay to the sound at mixdown, for added movement and size.

Plus you can't do wrong with some tube saturation even on a sound like this, so I used that as well on the insert channel.

Well, that kind of concludes it all! Hope you find this description useful.

i sample them from old school jungle.

some of them were great.

when i am in a spicy mood i will play with various filter lfo's but mostly i like them to be quite obviously sampled.

quite a cool effect, which gives relevance to this thread is to do the whole phased hoover effect over a sampled pad. take 2 copies of it and detune one by a cent. gives them a little growl. even nicer if it has a low pass lfo on it. more of a grrowlllloooolllooll... if ya can get what i am saying.
