Question pads/strings/general "ambience"

right, i was just wondering if anyone had any tips for getting decent sounding pads or strings. i usually find a sample of something and run it through some sort of a filter with either an envelope or synced lfo thing goin on. i sometimes run them through some sort of chorus/flanger or something to spice em up a bit. they dont sound bad, but theyre not particularly exciting.
what i wanna know is if anyone can give me foolproof advice on sampling sounds for pad/synth-type sounds and how to maybe spot such samples. if anyone could give me some basic pad synthesis advice that would be cool too.
thanks,
furious

Sample a movie with a really orchestral score, like from the 50's or somthin'. The ultimate pad synths I think are the Korg Wavestation and the Kawai K500S.

Try this:
Snag a short sample (really short, that short u could not use it as a 'real sample', mot longer than a quarter note) of such a decent pad (I got some from Pink floyd-tracks) and then set up a nice patch in a grain-synth (Granulab, crusher X or some Reaktor-ensembles).
Use obscure sources 4 this!
It may take some Time to get a seemless sound, but it works!
Then twist it and run it through Filters/ Vocoders/ chorus/ weird things and you can achieve sounds From synthetic 'Goldie' style to morphing metalic alien dogs on acid )

good luck (next time I'm gonna keep my secrets to me)

A good way to get really interresting sounds is to take a random sound, reverb it to fuck, take a snippet of the reverb tail, compress, loop, process (filter, phase, flanger, layer etc) and voila you've got a nice string/pad/ambient effect depending on how you processed it along the way. The cool thing about this technique is you've got absolute control all of the way and can shape the sound however you want.

I'm gonna let out the secret for how to create alien like dark atmosperic textures in sound forge...

Get a sample, any sample over 2 seconds long will do... different samples will create distinctly different sound textures.. I find female vocal accapella's to be great for teebee like sci fi alien textures..

Load it in sound forge or cool edit or anything that timestretches...

timestretch the fuck outta it... make it 500% longer then 500% shorter... and keep doing this about 10 times.. experiment with different timestretch settings... after a while you'll notice the original sample start to disappear and sum wierd shit replace it... sum amazing sounds can be created... the dark intros to 90% of my tracks were done exactly like this and Ive never had a bad result from this technique.......

Then use your ear to make the final small judgements... for example if you think it's a bit high pitched then pitchbend it... if you think it doesnt have enuff bass then EQ it...

Another technique is to get a granular synthesis program and feed it a shitload of samples and watch it take it's course.. the best one for this I have found is CrusherX Live which is a live MIDI capable granular synthesis module.. that way you can control it from your sequencer in real time if you feel the need... I havent been able to get much useful from this but those into more experimental drum n bass may find sum great oppurtunities in granular synthesis...

anyway thats my tip for this week...

some interesting methods on here that im certainly gonna give a go. ill try to let you know how i get on (perhaps in audio form if i ever bother to finish a fucking tune!).
by the way i think ive tried the timestretching process, i seem to remember getting shit results, although this was in my brand nu amatuer days (not that id call myself pro now mind). ill try it again actually and see if what i can come up with is any better...
thanks peoples, oh and keep em comin!

Now the bass even has its own distinct genre... Drum & Bass. The effect, when sufficiently amplified in a club environment, is of total immersion in body-shaking sounds. Scuba diving with a nuclear submarine would no doubt provide a similar buzz.
