CYANTIFIC
Over the past few years Cyantific have gone from being the dark horse in the Hospital stable, to the name on everyone's lips when it comes to forward thinking dance floor drum n bass. First linking up in college, where Jon coaxed Matt away from the evil lure of metal, the duo quickly began knocking out the beats and the bass. After serving their time as studio rats, honing their skills in their dark underground lair surrounded by test tubes and Bunsen burners, they decided that the world was ready for their musical mash up of sounds that has become the hallmark of a Cyantific record.
"We'd been writing for about four years before we sent anything off. We'd written this tune called 'Timescape', and John B picked up for his label. I was DJing at Traffic before High Contrast and he really liked the tune so he asked for a copy, and played it to the guys down at Hospital. A few weeks later we got a call from Tony wanting us to come down and have a chat."
Since signing to Hospital in 2002, the boys from South London have gone from strength to strength. 2005 saw the release of Don't Follow, featuring the mighty Diane Charlemagne of Timeless fame on vocal duties. The tune propelled Cyantific straight from the shadows to the Drum n Bass A-list... but they didn't rest on their laurels, and have been mixing up the bass and the beats for their debut album, Ghetto Blaster.
"It's not what you'd expect, and anyone who hasn't checked it out yet definitely should; I'd like to think it's a good listening experience. it's a four way balancing act when your writing an album. You need to be aware of all these elements, it's got to work for the headphones as well as the dance floor. Writing a D'n'B album is always going to be difficult with the restriction of the tempo. It's hard to make someone sit there and listen to seventy minutes of music all at the same speed. But at the end of the day as long as you enjoy the music you're making, that's all that matters isn't it."
And if he had to describe the Cyantific sound in three words?"...That's a hard one. I usually say something like, really, really good. I'd have to say, always changing, and...eclectic. Matt used to play in a metal band, while I got into Drum 'n' Bass through listening to the pirates on a shitty little radio, and listening to old school hip hop, just the same old story as everyone else I guess"
The album's a testament to this, and its' their ability to switch up styles that has kept Cyantific on top of their game. Taking things down and deep in the soul fuelled Neon Skyline, to the Dance floor mayhem created by tunes like Don't Follow. "The title track: 'Ghetto Blaster' has got a real Miami Bass feel about it. We'd always wanted to do something like that, and when we got the right samples, everything came together. There are also influences from Bristol D'n'B, with tracks like 'Snowflake', which has also got a sixties Sci-Fi vibe running through it actually, which is something both me and Matt are really into. Half the album's made up of older ideas we just finished off really. Originally the release was meant to be a year earlier, but it just wasn't ready."
But ready they most definitely are, and the album bugs well and truly bitten. 'Ghetto Blaster' hasn't even hit the shops in its finished form, and they're already thinking about number two! "We want to write with a theme in mind for the next one, not so all the tracks are the same, but just so it's a little more coherent. 'Ghetto Blaster' is just a collection of tracks really."
"We've also got a lot of solo stuff on the go. Matt's been working on some Acid House and Techno projects while I've just done a remix of 'spacejam' for Matt Logistics. Ha-ha, I don't know if it'll come out though!"
With tour dates all over the U.S.A. and Europe in the near future, (check www.myspace/cyantific for details), the lads from the lab are sure to be kept busy over the next year. Fear not however, for those already craving some fresh Cyantific action; the dynamic duo have been beavering away, geting back in the studio. The end result, 'Coming Unstuck', has been jumped on already by Zinc, Andy C and Marky amongst others.
But where to catch the Cyantific badness I hear you cry. For those of you who can not get enough of those lab coated luminaries, they are unleashing their very own web site on the world. WWW.CYANTIFIC.CO.UK will be up and running in a few weeks, and will feature the low down on the latest dubs, have wall paper and special mixes to download and even samples for all of you budding producers out there to get your teeth into...including the drums from Don't Follow! It feels like Christmas all over again!
