script (video/mp3) Refreshed@Propaganda: Moscow's best drum&bass party

*this thread is now regulary updated with new videos and recorded live sets*

Hi everyone!

So i've been back and buzzin in Moscow for a while now. Doing various things.

To cut a long story short, 5 monthes ago we launched a weekly d&b night at Moscow's longest running and most respected club Propaganda. World's best djs like Kevin Saunderson, Derrick May, King Britt, Steve Bug, etc, etc all visited Propaganda and count it as their best spot to play in Moscow. The club itself is somewhat reminiscent of Blue Note in London.

So when we were offered to host drum&bass on Friday at that type of club, it was a huge step forward for this music in Russia, as for the past years the image of d&b music was really bad locally. It was portrayed as music for teens, etc and most of the events happening were proving such judgement. I've been trying to change this through collaborating with Hospital and Soul:R, thus hosting Hospitality and Soul:ution events in Moscow, which gathered more mature audience.

Why do we say it is best?

The real breakthrough happened when we started Refreshed @ Propaganda. Launch party on July 6th had DJ Lee & MC Justyce headlining. It was amazing, everyone who visited it told us it was one of a kind and definitely the first party of that type in Russia. DJ Lee told me it was the best gig he had for a very long time and that it was such a refreshing vibe it restored his faith in clubland! Every single party ever since had the club packed and every dj that would come from abroad was really impressed with quality of event and the crowd.

Through the last 5 monthes we had guests such as Lynx, Marcus Intalex, Goldie, DJ Flight, D-Bridge, Chris.SU Stamina MC, Longman (Tactile), DJ Lee, MC Justyce, Subject 13, Utah Jazz and Syncopix.

Resident team is being carefully put together and now includes russian drum&bass pioneers Paul B, Subwave, 4K and S.Peres, plus international stars Stamina MC and Syncopix. If everything goes well, we will be giving a residency to Marcus Intalex and Soul:R crew in future, also Tactile crew residency is being discussed now.

Ok, enough words, let's skip to the main part

Have to say, that looks like a cool crowd.

I always like to see how people dance in other countries...esp when they know very little about dnb. Most of these types have probably travelled to London, Berlin etc, I'm guessing...so maybe not that alien to them.

Nice one!

The thing is, drum&bass been developing in Russia for the past 12 years, the only problem is that the people who were in charge for the most part weren't really doing any sort of cultural exchange, so the scene is somewhat week and undeveloped now, even though it has got a long history. The darker and harder edged sounds are dominant now and it all only attracts kids.

At our parties we definitely have a mixed, more mature crowd, taking in account that Propaganda club been running for 10 years, and it is sort of a local The End if we would compare it to London. 40% of international house/techno djs visiting Moscow played at Propaganda. There were couple of parties where 70% of audience were girls, and i think that's a breakthrough for d&b in any part of the globe.

So, what we are trying to do is get all kinds of people down to our weekly, the music is also very different from what's happening in Russia for the most part. We go very deep and futuristic as far as the music goes. Now we have a lot of techno/house heads checking out this thing, and i think it's really positive.

For the first time in many years club industry heads here started looking up to drum&bass like it's something serious.

Unforgettable nights! never seen something like this anywhere in the world. While playing at Refreshed, i realize that drum&bass has a future in Moscow. feels good knowing that more mature audience is getting interested in this music, they never heard of it, but when they get into it they like it. We've been doing it for two monthes and throughout this time managed to prove that you can dance to d&b when you are over 20!

Intend to visit again early next year so i will try and time it right so I can go to a DnB night there like yours at Propanganda. Also Therapy Sessions look out of this world there.

I would of thought Electro Soul System would attract a mature audience surely?

Last time I went back in May we nearly went to this Propaganda place but ended up getting dragged to this B2 club which played Russian pop music.... ultimate fun.... trying to sing along to some russian song about pinocchio whilst making pinocchio nose impressions with girls who I was really unable to communicate with! Had so much fun... good times!

Personally, i think events like Therapy Sessions is exactly what is wrong with drum&bass in Russia, to each on their own i guess, but those parties here are filled by 12-16 year olds, all on pills and wasted, the music which is being played is getting closer to gabber speed, etc, etc. Not really a pleasant picture, but then again i shouldn't be judging it as it is very different from what we do, completely different genre and culture actually.

Heheh, yeah B2 is a fun place, there are some decent concerts there once in a while.

Hope to see you down at our night sometime, we are on every Friday.

Infiniti is r&b club and entertainment center, yeah, nowhere close to being the best club by any means, it's a place for r&b teens/students, i think it actually stopped operation few monthes ago. Don't know much about Battlefield events as of now though, so can't really compare. And that would be wrong to compare, as two totally different things.

Nice one bro!

Oh yeah, a lot of dodgy promoters in Moscow, that's for sure. Some booking agencies are literally freaking out from what i hear, not just in d&b also, but in general. But i guess it's all about talking to the promoter and seeing if he actually knows what he is doing. A lot of very young guys are getting on the case to promote d&b here. I hope nothing too serious happened to you!
