A tip for getting subs/kicks the right level

This is a pretty simple but quite useful tip. All you need to do is lowpass both your tune and the one you're referencing it with. About 200hz should work well. This allows you to listen to and reference sub frequencies much more easily. I find that this works best with headphones because they don't suffer from room acoustics problems. Combine this with a spectrum analyser and you should be able to judge your subs and kicks pretty accurately

This also works with highpassing and bandpassing for comparing mids and tops...

Good tip - calyx was doing this with his subwoofer on that dnb arena video ages ago and everyone went running around wanting to buy a sub with a low pass sweep, while the sensible ones amongst us realised we could do exactly the same thing with a lp filter plugin

nice one will try this- my worry is when i do tune sthey sound fine on speakers and headphones (ipod mix) but on loud systems the bass goes haywire- hopefully this will help me tame it

i actually do a form of this but for midrange...

using the camelphat ive set up a 'Auratone' preset (probably got the tip from doa ) where it highpasses at 100 and lowpasses at 12khz (or its it 16khz?!?! ill check) and then play my track through it- if it sounds balanced i know the mid range is pretty much ok- the problem i sued to have was when my stuff was played ons amll systems the bass would be all over the place- i use this tip to help that but am now looking for the opposite- something for big systems.....

That is a really good idea... all I have to do is turn off the 8020as and leave the sub to play on its own!

Why did I not think of that before?

very good tip...actually been ding this for a while

but not only can you judge your kick and bass better but it helps you to see what over sounds are bleeding through and interferring with you LF

example...if you low pass at 80 or whatever and you hear a lot of ..something midrange..synth,bongo,vocal whatever..

you know to eq that channel cause it's interferring

rather than just sitting there listening to the whole mix wondering why it sounds like crap

yeah, I have been doing this for a few years ;)

ashamedly, I always figured this is what everyone was doing anyways

I also high pass to get an idea if the tune will sound thick enough on a lofi/weak system.

stellar tip :)

Yeah I'm going to buy some ok-ish hifi speakers as well just to see what your average listener will hear as well. Good call

Great tip. I do this as well. I like using the Waves C4 or any other multiband compressor because it allows be not only to solo the low end but 4 different bands in any combination!
