INFILTRATA
DOA: Hi! Thanks for doing a mix for your friendly neighborhood DogsOnAcid. How's it going on the left coast?
Infiltrata: Thanks DOA fams. I am hyped to even be considered to do this mix. I rarely make mixes for online distribution but I love DogsOnAcid and everything it stands for. The Left Coast is okay, the weather is great but we have had natural disaster after natural disaster lately. It started off with 500 car pileup on the 5 freeway, then an earthquake in san fransisco and then a massive fire all in the course of 1 month!
DOA: Sounds wild. Glad you're okay! So, you've been releasing tunes for a while now. How did you first get into production? What big name producers / DJ's were you into back in the day?
Infiltrata: I have been producing Drum and Bass for about 8 or 9 years give or take. I was in bands before that and an MC as well. My influences were all across the board. From early Metalheadz, Prototype and Renegade Hardware, all the way to early Hospital releases. People such as Photek, Konflict, Dillinja, Stakka & Skynet, DSL, Aphrodite, Paradox and Hive were some of my biggest inspirations.
DOA: I know a lot of accomplished artists can fondly recall the beginning of their career in terms of people who gave them a chance when they were unknown. Are there any people who you feel really helped you a lot in the beginning as far as label owners or other producers?
Infiltrata: I definitely understand where that comes from. My situation was very strange because I found myself starting to create music around the time the internet boom happened. I mean the internet was always large, but with the creation of Napster and the boom of message boards, I found myself in circles with people from all around the world. I got some of my first spins from Nick Argon, Hive, Origin, Hazen, Hochi, and RAW in California. I also had daily support from the old DSCI4 / DOA message board gangs. Some of the likes lurking were Evol intent, Cyanide, Mayhem, Sinthetix, Rawtee, Hochi, and Black Sun Empire. True story.
DOA: As most people know, you have released with TEKDBZ. How did you first hook up with Photek and end up becoming a part of his crew?
Infiltrata: Photek was a major inspiration to begin with, but it only got better when I passed his A&R a demo and he was really into some of the tunes. He was forming a label through SRD at the time called Slate which was originally supposed to have classic Photek dubs. Hochi ended up taking the vision further by incorporating vocalists into the mix of things. At the same time, Photek was workin on an album with Mental Sharp and he was in the studio with Craze, so it only seemed fit to put the pieces of
the puzzle together. We really wanted to put together a movement for drum and bass that wasnt as conventional as the approach that the majority was using. There were nights where all of us would be in the studio at the same time and I just felt honored to be in the presence with all these great artists.
DOA: You've started your own label at this point in time, which is exciting news! Can you tell us a little bit about why you decided to begin Infiltrata Recordings and your vision for it is?
Infiltrata: Infiltrata Recordings began when Breaker from Guerilla Recordings helped me get it started with NU Urban UK. I could probably give some philosophical mumbo jumbo for a reason to start the label, but the bottom line was I wanted an outlet for my material and any material I was feeling to get released on vinyl and for digital sales.
DOA: As far as what people can expect from this label in the future, do you plan on releasing primarily your own material? If not, are you open to accepting demos from newer artists?
Infiltrata: I definitely plan on releasing majority of my material and collaborations with other artists. The first release will be a collaboration track with Limewax called Ethio, backed with an original track entitled '56 Fusion'. The initial idea was to have the A side be a solo side and the AA side to be the collaboration side (I dont
know I kept thinking of the As as people). I plan on releasing some collaboration tracks with Demo, DEFine, Evol Intent, Hochi and many more. I also plan on releasing some solo stuff from Demo, Upbeats and Unknown Error.
DOA:We hear you're also well into dubstep lately. Traitor! Just kidding, I love dubstep. So, what's the story here? Were there any producers who really struck you and inspired you to start producing?
Infiltrata: Hehe, I knew I couldnt avoid that one. I have been producing Dubstep for about 2 years now under the name 12th Planet. My Earliest inspiration was Tech itch. He was the first person to even say the word dubstep" to me, in like early 2005 or something. I ended up going to WMC that summer, or maybe it was the next (I'm hazy) but I met up with my label mate on Cartel, Juju, at Crazes house. He had a ton of tunes done and from then on I was very inspired to start producing it from that moment forward.
DOA: What output of yours can people look forward to the dubstep front?
12th Planet:My first Dubstep release will be in December, on the anthem maker Tes LA Roks label, Noppa (distributed by LOAD Media). Its a song called 'Tonka' and it is collaboration with Swytch (USA). I have another release forthcoming on Swedish Label Red Volume as well. The tunes are called '28 Hours Later' and 'B-more Step'. I have a couple of other singles that arent decided yet, but there should be a full head of steam rollin for the releases in January.
My buddy Andrew and I have started up a dubstep label as well called Smog Records and the first release should be droppin at the end of the year. The release is DJ Evol - Sickness, which has been getting a lot of plays especially on RinseFM on Plasticians Show. The other side is smokescreen by myself under the name 12th Planet, which has been receiving an equal amount of plays.
