Are Reeses just a phase?

Do you reckon reese style basslines will still be around in 10 years time? Or do you reckon a new sound style will have evolved?

It seems to have stuck around all these years and I don't see it going anyway for a bit but what do you reckon?

(Drunken post!)

good god i fucking hope they are just a phase..
(become a staple of the scene, but it's time to move the fuck on)

unless you're doing something sick with them like a mistabishi for example (lowlife's theme ) then there's no fucking need for them.

it's 2008
everyday someone else (myself included) bitches about the scene and how it's stagnating a bit

...then you see another thread asking the same fucking question about a cliche element of drum and bass...
shit doesn't progress if people don't try to.
shit also doesn't progress if people copy what's already been done, without any innovation at all

also
if you want to tell your friends and family that drum and bass is an actual 'music'
you might want to play them something with more musical elements (i.e. less reeses)

If it IS a phase, its a phase which has lasted about twice as long as drum and bass had itself, before they came about.

The grammar in that sentence is horrible but you know what I mean.

The majority of reese dnb tracks = (This is just my opinion before someone gets sand in their mangina).

I can understand why people who might not have been exposed to them before might find them amazing and fresh (thats how i felt when i first heard one in 1997) but they have been used regularly in dnb for 11 years now and to say its got a bit rinsed would be the understatement of the century.

to answer the actual question...11 years and counting, i think its safe to say they are not a phase.

lol no shit

how can 2 detuned sawtooth waveforms be a 'phase' - its just one part of a dnb producers' arsenal... yes, you can be boring with them but you can also be incredibly creative with them.

Christ, I hate you small minded fools for continuing to hate on them--it's the reason dnB is in such a sorry state today, you reductive-ass idiots. You don't like their "advanced" version of DnB? Go work that hard to make your own. Go blow dnB out in another direction, make it into your own new thing, do something ANYTHING to advance the sound.

Or, you know, go make the 50 millionth deep drumfunk track and shove it up your ass with the rest.

I dont wanna sound like a cunt....

I've only been posting on here for about a month and I must of seen about 20 different reese threads popping up in that time.

Why is everybody so obsessed? There's so much more to dnb than resse reese reese reese reese.

Well probably because Guitar is to Metal as Reese is to Drum & Bass so it's kind of inevitable that threads will turn up constantly with this topic, especially on how to make them etc as it's almost a fundamental part of drum & bass.

Saying that, it doesn't mean that if you can't make or even use Reeses that your music doesn't class as drum & bass, I was just illustrating that it is a fundamental part of the genre and therefore unavoidable....

Thus my question....

Whoa I sound so intelligent for an alcoholic

Indeed man, you're right. But Reese is also associated (if not almost stereotypically) with drum & bass.... so...

Don't get me wrong man I'm not trying to disregard any other form of bassage other than teh Sawz.

What are your thoughts on the subject now we've got your whinging aside?

LOL @ whingeing, too true!

I dunno man, They're a good tool to have to hand. Nice to hear them used sparingly ya know, like ed rush used to.

Think it's just overkill @ the mo, another amen maybe?

Although I'd rather listen to some evil spor reese than a chrissy chris mobile phone bassline

I've found myself that once you learn how to construct a reese you spend too much time trying to get that ultimate phat as fuck tear your arse apart sound, and the tune tends to suffer.

Drum n bass can be dark as fuck with just those two components - drum n bass

Again, maybe I'm geting old!

I'm off to a gig now to play some ska, I'll be back

hehe yeah man

You meantion amens though... again, it's a tool so to speak and everyone thought that was a phase but it's still around now and has been since the early 90s....

I wouldn't class chrissy chris's basslines as reeses though, more like farty square waves. lol. But then again I do like a bit of the wobble but at heart I'm a "neurofunk"/old renegade hardware kinda person.

(Have fun at the gig btw man)

Anyway, more thoughts please!
