DJ SILVER
DOA: Thanks for chatting with us today! Going back to the beginnings of your career, how did you first get into drum and bass?
Silver: Well, I got into DJing from my granddad. He used to have a sound system back in the 80’s and my cousin and I would help him cart it around Birmingham to all the blues parties around the city. We were never allowed in the parties though because we were too young. We would sleep in the truck until the morning, when the party was done and then we would break down the sound! We were paid 50 pound which is a lot of money when you're only 11.
One day in about 1989, a friend of mine came over to my house with a Sasha tape and from there I got into the whole rave thing. My granddad gave me some old turntables and I started Ding around raves in the Birmingham area under different aliases which I wont get into now... but, yeah that’s basically how got I started.
DOA: When and how did you first hook up with Sonic and decide to start working together? What was it about Accidental Heroes that enabled you two to work so well together and to make such great tunes for so long?
Silver: I met Sonic at a night that we were both performing at, called Champion Sounds @ the Jam in Manchester. This was back in ‘97 when I used to MC. The band was called Hive at the time and they used to make live D+B. The band members were Sonic, Raize and Bones and also Alex and James Ford, who are now known as Simian Mobile Disco. We got along naturally and had a lot of laughs in the studio; smoking weed and getting drunk a lot! What else could you do in Manchester?
When we first met, it was all about Accidental Heroes, which basically started out as a group of Manchester soldiers who were doing jungle shows in the area. At first, the Accidental Heroes crew was comprised of me, Sonic, Raize, Mark OD, Bones, MC Ton Piper, Kaza, MC Tiga and few other people as well! Basically, it was about making tunes and finding shows around the city. This only lasted for about a month, before me, Sonic, Raize and Bones went in and started to make tunes by ourselves. After a while Pete (Razie) found a job in London, so he pursued that which only left Sonic and I as Bones started to make hip hop with some of the other lads from the group. But that’s how we came about!
DOA: When did you first decide to start Nemesis Recordings? Tell us a bit about the conception of the label and your initial goals for it.
Silver: NEMESIS started around 2002, with the first release from Xample and Sol and from there it has grown to be one of the most watched labels in D+B. In simple terms, the concept behind the label has always been to expose new producers.
The label likes to boast that it breaks new producers in the scene. For example, look at people like DJ Origin from London who has now signed to Jaydan's new label. Also DJ Andy from Brazil, Xample now on RAM. The Alliance, who went on to work with Bad Company, had a member who has since won Grammy awards for working with big hop acts like Timbaland, Neptunes, Busta Rhymes, plus many more! So, that’s my concept behind Nemesis; helping new artists feel free in what they do! Whether it's D+B or hip hop or anything basically! We at Nemesis we like to see producers grow into something special and most of them on the label have seemed to have done that pretty well!
DOA: What have you got lined up for Nemesis in the future that you can tell us about?
Silver: There is a lot forthcoming from the camp this year and into 2009. Up next is a new signing from Russia, a producer buy the name of Prestige who has some new bangers which are currently doing the rounds on the dub circuit, so be on the look out for him! Also look out for a 12” coming from DJ origin once again.
My highly anticipated debut album DANCE DANCE DANCE! is also set to drop later in the year. I can’t tell you much about the LP now but I can tell you that the tunes are 70% done. I’m just working on a deal right now and the other business crap that comes with doing an LP so you all know how that is! The LP will feature tracks by myself but also collaborations with artists such as Digital, J Majik, Skream, Gridlok, Le Lutin (France) and many more! Remember where u heard this first!
DOA: It appears you've got a monthly residency at the Laundry Bar in Miami. Can you tell us a bit about this monthly night and your involvement with it?
Silver: Yeah, this is a new night I’m doing with electro house / hip hop music. No, I haven't sold out! I still love my D+B but I do like a little bit of house from time to time. House is where I came from originally and you already know us for the disco D+B sound, so why not start a night doing this?
It’s the first of each month, so if any of you people out there in Miami on holiday, be sure to come say hello! Forthcoming DJ's at the bar will be Stretch Armstrong, Kill the Noise, Le Castle Vania, Busy P and the Ed Banger Crew. Also, don’t forget that every Friday is Basshead at the bar which is a D+B night. Acts to come are John B, Marcus Intalex, Fresh, Dieselboy, plus loads more! Please check the links below for more information.
DOA: How did your remix of Justice vs. Simian's "We Are Your Friends" come about? What has the feedback that you've gotten been like from D+B heads?
Silver: Basically, it came about when I first heard the tune a year back with my friend Juan Basshead, and I thought to myself, “I would love to do a remix of this!”, so I got the samples together and the rest is history. I am friends with Simian as we used to be in a band together back in the day, called Spellbound, which featured me, James ford, Jenna G and Ton, Diamond Ed, plus many other artists. So, I jus asked him if I could do the remix and there it is. I have been getting a good reaction from the tune a lot of DJs call me telling me how they been smashing it last night and had to rewind it 2 times (Roni) and yeah, people are feeling it, you know? I’m jus trying to stick to my housey sound on this track and bring different styles to the table, so that’s basically what this tune is also about for me.
DOA: As of this point in time, what are some of your musical goals for the future?
Silver: To complete my LP for release before Christmas! And to just keep making music, DJing and educating people about the music everywhere I go around the world. I’m looking to get into films as well, maybe some acting roles or doing scores or extra stuff! I’m just going to keep working hard at anything I do and take it day by day. If you really want something, you can get it.
