Yeah I'm sick of this wobble style DNB and all these big lead synth riffs all coming from the same plugins with no work or effort being put in when it comes to sampling. Back in 93 when I got me first real setup we had only 2mb of sampling time, one FX box, a few synths, atari and a mixer. Also we had no audio tracks.
The thing is you had to put in the work and experiment, plus you concentrated more on your patterns and had more freedom to do anything even with less technology.... Plus we did not have the internet to read tutorials and download everyone other producers samples.

Plus buying a studio back then cost more than it does now i.e. ram for an atari would cost £199 for 2mb. Point is you would not spend the money unless you lived for this shit.
Its a piece of piss to distort a bass with an lfo on it and add an amen and a few film samples.
Now any man and his dog can get Reason and knock up a shit tune and follow the big boys like sheep.....

To be honest I could go on for days with this but bottom line is be individual.... Do what you feel and not what every other big name is doing out there......

Because to be honest SOME of them are now making crap anyway

I dont know why Chris thinks this set is so superior to the current sound. Dont get me wrong, the set is nice but better than what we have at the moment ? I dont know...

I miss those rollers, that just use some cool sounds, Krust - True Stories or Dylan - True Force as two examples.

We have a very different techstep sound. Its a lot more aggressive and noisy, but then again Metropolis, The Mutant revisited and Shadowboxing where perceived as very aggressive and noisy at that time too.
The whole neurothing, well i was never a fan of that, but i was never a fanatic for ed rush and optical (well wormhole).
I think neuro is the techno style gone too far.

As photek once said, DnB is a mixture of hiphop, reggae and techno and if one of those elements dominate to much it gets "bad".....

Whats also different are the beats. I dont know how you call the style beats are nowadays, some people say two-step, some even dullstep. I would really like so hear a bit of variation again !

A lot comes down to the fact that everybody values technique over style.
Or as someone else said: science over art.
And because of that a lot of people want to have their sounds....well sound like their favorite producer.

Just my take on things. I've listened to loads of these sets now and it's just made me question a few things about whats going on now and how as a label we can improve the music we put out.

I think the Winter of Content Lp had a very unique sound ! Would love to hear another one in that vein !

The same with Ill Logic & Raf´s White Noise EP. Had everything, it was deep, unique and "experimental".

The Japanese have a word that you might apply to this: Wabi-sabi; it means the perfection in imperfection.

spot on!

dnb needs creativity again or else the golden years will be over for good (and the fact is we needn't just complain about it but try to join forces and make things better)

thx for the set btw Chris!
