NEOSIGNAL
DOA: First off, you guys have linked to create NEOSIGNAL. Word is that you guys were tired of solely dealing with outside labels, and wanted to have a more direct handle on your career path. Are there any particular situations where you realized "hey, this isn't for me - I need to do this on my own"?
NEOSIGNAL: After all of our years in the scene, we felt like it was about time to finally launch our own platform. I think we've established ourselves as artists with a very distinct and individual sound, so building up a label that totally suites our musical character and credo made sense in our point of view. It surely is not a fact that we weren't happy with how things were rolling in respect to all the other labels we work with. We, in fact, are really thankful for having the chance to have released our music on so many labels all around the globe, and learned a lot from that. All of the labels treated us very well in all the matters they could. Subtitles, for example, is still like a home for us and is the label we still pay lots of respect to. Same with Vision or Shadow Law... we did and still do feel strongly connected to the Subtitles and Vision family and surely will continue working with them or other labels, maybe just not to the same extent as in the last years. With us (Phace and Misanthrop) being best friends, the decision to build up an own outlet for our music came by quite quickly. Altogether, it took us a year to line everything up properly. So far, we find it really exciting to see it growing up. The first release will hit the streets mid-November 2008, and we really do look forward how it is going to be accepted by the scene...
DOA: Phace - how was it releasing your debut album on a label like Subtitles? Do you feel that the project was everything it could've been, or do you wish you could go in and change things, or release it a different way?
Phace: The Psycho album project was the best thing which could have happened to us around that time for sure. We must give a huge big up to Teebee, ST Holdings and Jo from Echo Location who supported the whole project in all the important aspects and matters we could have ever asked for. We surely would make the exact same decision again if we could travel back in time, but for us, it's not about going a step back, but going forward into the right direction.
DOA: How long have you guys been friends/collaborators? Why did you decide to create NEOSIGNAL together, as opposed to doing things separately?
NEOSIGNAL: We have been friends for pretty much 8 years now and came up with the idea of setting a label up in a joint venture during our NZ/OZ tour last year. Being mates and individual grown-up artists builds the fundament of the project. A friendship is a relation where you can trust your partner blindly, and with each of us having his own qualities, the reasons are quite obvious it couldn't be any better to "raise this kid up together". We think it would have been tougher to build up separate labels on our own, as we are quite busy these days and we really enjoy doing this and share both the effort and excitement.
DOA: Why NEOSIGNAL? Does that name hold any special meaning to you?
NEOSIGNAL: Michael had this name in his head for quite a while, even before we were thinking about doing a label or such. All the brainstorms for something special to name this project ended in no-mans-land. So it suddenly fell into place again, and we decided to get back to what we already had - which was NEOSIGNAL. For us, NEOSIGNAL is a synonym for the sound of the present moment, and of tomorrow, without forgetting about what the past has taught us.
DOA: You guys have sorted out two singles already - what's scheduled after this? Any thoughts on EPs, artist LPs, etc.?
NEOSIGNAL: That's right, we have two singles first, and there will be another single for NEOSIGNAL003 which we are working on right at the moment. It looks like its going to be a collaborative single, and more details about this will be released soon. Surely we do think about doing EPs and maybe an LP at some point, but as the first two releases haven't hit the streets yet, we do want to see how it is going to work out and then decide about the moves we're gonna make, step by step.
DOA: We see you guys linked up with Triple Vision for distribution. I can imagine the similar sounds of their stable of labels drew you to them; were they your first/only choice in terms of distribution, and if so, why?
NEOSIGNAL: We were in negotiations with three different distributors when we were lining things up for the label and, in the end, Triple Vision did most out of all of them to get us on board. We already have been working with Triple Vision in the past years and that always worked out very well and smooth. We still didn't find it easy to deciding on one distributor in the end, but we must say that this surely has been the right decision so far.
DOA: Do you guys have any DJ bookings lined up in the near future?
NEOSIGNAL: We, Misanthrop and Phace, are both on the road all around Europe pretty much every weekend, and anyone interested can easily browse through the list of locations on our MySpace pages. Phace is going to do another Australia tour at the end of the year for the Christmas and New Year's period.
