TWISTED INDIVIDUAL
DOA: First up, we just got word from Grid HQ that your 2002 LP, Tooled Up, is being re-released!? How did this come about, and why now?
Twisted Individual: Formation kindly agreed to hand the rights to my music over, and it hasn't been available for the past 5/6 years so we thought it was a good idea to release it to a new generation of listeners.
DOA: Will this re-release just be a straight re-pressing of the original, or will there be some added goodies (remixes, new/unreleased tracks, etc.) with the package? Also, what format(s) will this come out on?
Twisted Individual: The DJ mix from the original CD has been replaced with an unreleased works CD, covering a decade of tunes. Some really early things from when I first started producing, right up to things from last year which didn't get finished; I also managed to squeeze the ''Gimp Mask'' remix on the end.
DOA: While we're speaking on the re-release of your previous longplayer, do you have any plans for a new album of your work?
Twisted Individual: I've got a lot of back catalogue that hasn't been available digitally, so that's all going online real soon. I'm also putting together a Greatest Hits CD; maybe one day I'll get around to doing another artist album - there would have a lot of downtempo stuff on it, too.
DOA: We also know you've got a few 12'' releases coming on Zombie before the year is out. Can you give us an idea of what we'll see from you before year's end?
Twisted Individual: First, there's a real bouncy 12'' with ''Magnum Juice'' and ''Jelly On A Plate''. Straight after that, we got ''Same Shit, Different Day'' with ''Lunatic Response Unit'' which are both a bit more steppy... I've got a lot of other tunes that aren''t scheduled yet, like ''Donkey Punch'', ''High 2 Nite'', ''Missin In Action'', ''Squeal Like A Pig'', ''The Wraith Of Fibre'', ''Sand In My Shoes'' and others. There's also a remix of an Influx UK track coming on Formation sometime soon. I've got a shit load of downtempo tunes that might one day get a release, too.
DOA: Now, one of the things people have always associated with you is the quirky titles you've given your tracks over the years. Are you just having a laugh with these names, or are there any inside-jokes that we are unaware of?
Twisted Individual: There are a few meaningful titles, but most are just for fun.
DOA: I imagine you've seen, on this forum and others, that when people start trying to slate the scene, your name seems to pop up in conversations, specifically speaking on how your sound is wrong for the scene. What do you think is your place within the DnB spectrum? And what do you have to say to any haters or detractors out there?
Twisted Individual: Breathing some fun and life into the scene which gets a bit up its own arse at times, actually... most of the time. Hugs & kisses to all the haters, I forgive you... especially the industry haters xxxxxxxxxxxx
DOA: You have quite the stable of labels, from Grid and Zombie to Allsorts and Guinea Pig. Why did you feel the need to set up each imprint?
Twisted Individual: I'm really into some of the mellower stuff. People like Electrosoul System and Mutated Forms, but Grid wasn't the right home for these type of tunes; we tried a couple releases, but I think we missed the right market switching sounds up, so we set up Allsorts. Zombie was set up because we had 2 much material for Grid, and Guinea Pig is for when I need a break from DnB.
DOA: If you have to choose a definitive release for each of your labels, which one (or ones) would they be, and why?
Twisted Individual:
Allsorts Electrosoul System ''Falling'': This was our first release on the label. I love the way he twists the samples up in all of his tunes, but this is my favorite thing from him. It's rollin' and its chill, sort of tune you could play in any set.
Zombie Zen ''Reverse Cowgirl'': Wasn't really into this at first, but it grew on me. Typical Zen sound, big loud beats that drown out the tune your mixing out of... always blew up the dance.
Grid: It's too hard to choose. My faves are Zen's ''Hovercraft'', Zen's ''Break Even'', Clipz' remix of ''Hand Grenade'', and ''Galloping Elephant''.
DOA: What's next up on the release schedule for your imprints? Any EP or LP projects from your artists on the horizon?
Twisted Individual: Next up is a bad badabadbad bad boy EP from Vital Elements; all 4 tunes are ruff. That's followed by a Serum 12'' with ''Concrete Donkey'' and ''Urban Gorilla'' (we've got an animal thing goin' on over at Grid HQ: elephants, donkeys, pigs, camels, goats)... after that, there's probably gonna be a Zen EP with ''Hovercraft'' remix, ''Dark 'Em Up'' and a couple of new bits... and then I've got a release scheduled which will probably be ''Donkey Punch''. We also have lots of releases lined up on Allsorts... a Human Factor 12", an A-Sides & Deeizm 12" with an Influx UK remix, a Mutated Forms EP, and a 12" and releases from Electrosoul Ssystem and KG. The next 2 Zombie 12's are courtesy of me.
DOA: Let's get a bit personal with a round of FIVE QUESTIONS:
a) What are some of your favorite hobbies outside of making and release music?
I walk a lot, everyday for exercise. Most days up to 10miles... I just plug my iPod in and go - some call me Forrest Gump. I've just recently moved to California, 1 mile from the beach, so my walk is bangin'... haha in your face! I've got a big passion for underground Hip-Hop, some of my favourites being: R.A. The Rugged Man, Sick Jacken, Necro, 7L & Esoteric, Atmosphere and Funkdoobiest. I haven't watched TV for about 5 years. I like to cook. I've been a vegetarian for a year now, and eating out has become a pain in the arse. I talk to plants, but only a special type of plant that grows in hot climates. I could probably tell your fortune with all the books on astrology and numerology I've read... and I like a conspiracy too.
b) What's your favorite horror movie?
Evil Dead 2... piss funny. I got a shit load of horrors, they're the best films for samples, especially the old ones, but if I'm gonna watch a film, I'd pick a scifi like the original Planet of The Apes or Total Recall.
c) If you could switch places with any DnB producer or DJ, who would you like to be and why?
Roni Size, 'cos he's got some serious credits. I'd like to work with B Real as well.
d) What's the oddest thing someone has said to you after a gig?
Some real kinky shit that I wouldn't repeat here...
e) What's your best acronym for D.O.A.?
Doin' Over America
DOA: Can we get a current top 10 from you?

DOA: Where can heads check you out on the decks? Is there going to be a tour lined up for the re-release of Tooled Up?
Twisted Individual: More in the states than the UK, as I've just moved to California, dude... so any US promoters should hit me up on MySpace.
DOA: Do you have any shout outs or final thoughts before we get out of here?
Twisted Individual: All the fam, all the fans... lots of love xxxx; big shout to Gareth for all the graft and support, and all of the artists for their talents.
