I know people that spend 4 days whoring themselves out for each hour they spend working on music. It seems like its more about how many "friends" they have and less about the music. If the music is really good, then people will come to you naturally. For me, music is about creation and art, less about acceptance or "fans".
think you may have missed the point of the post, which is about getting the benefits of these sorts of services without spending loads of time on them.
for example - using ping while i'm sitting on the bus, i can write a blog post on my phone and post it to all my blog sites in one go from the handset before i even get to the studio. It's not about wasting time, it's about maximising time. See the difference?
And as for people coming to you naturally if the music is good - not sure you could ever measure that. For every one bedroom genius that gets 'discovered', there are probably 20,000 with tom@myspace as their only fan.
It's a specious argument anyway - how could you ever know that good artists will always be discovered if they're never discovered for you to think otherwise? It's a tautological argument and doesn't make any sense once you think about it for more than 30 seconds...
But anyway - like i said in the twitter thread, if your militantly against giving people access to your music on a point of principle then all power to you. I find it slightly odd though, I'll be honest.
