NOISIA
The last few years, we've seen Noisia begin their foray into the world of Breaks/Electro - a popular feat, lately, but not something we saw too much around the time they first started making headway under their Hustle Athletics alter-ego. Still, keeping things in simple terms, these guys seem to just see it as another outlet to enjoy themselves. "It's fun to do other music; we've been inspired by a lot of genres lately and we've always made lots and lots of different stuff; sometimes to purely take the piss and sometimes half-serious".
However, with the studio skills they possess, it's natural that the progression from what was playful and fun ended up being transmitted into some seriously solid tunes and, therefore, lots of releases. The results have been praised by those outside the DnB community, and, thankfully, many within it. "Sometimes, parts of the crowd don't appreciate us dropping a few breaks/electro tracks, but most of the time it's welcomed. Of course, we care about the opinion of the DnB community (or rather, our audience), but you cannot let that set borders for your own creativity. And besides, we still make lots of DnB".
Other side projects for Noisia included the widely popular Drifter (which has been incorporated under the Noisia name), as well as the quirky and mysterious De Huilende Rappers, a side project that happened a few years ago, basically consisting of a lot of experimentation, and playing with language. "For those who are not fluent in Dutch, it's not very serious. We've done one gig and have declined requests since; we don't want to make something of it, in a professional sense". They explain, "it's about making whatever, whenever you feel like it, basically. Since we more or less stopped smoking weed, it's been slow. We did do a ballad and a euro-house song recently, though. (Ed. Note: Knowing the jokers these guys are known to be, that last bit may very well be a joke)
We assume that you've not forgotten about the remixes for Moby and Prodigy that they did last year, and while the boys are tight-lipped about anything else we can expect remix wise (trust us, we tried), they did spill a bit about a project from the past you may have forgotten about - a collaboration with Amon Tobin. Not finished yet, this project is down, but not out by any means. "We are still very excited about it, and look forward to getting an opportunity to finish it together. We got him to sing in our studio last time!" As far as other collaborations, keep your ear to the ground for some forthcoming works with Phace, Icicle, Sabre and an "accidental" tune with Jade. We're also told that Noisia is scheduled to be in the studio with Dom in the coming weeks, and it's safe to say that can only mean good things.
Picking the brains of such a popular outfit for some of present day DnB's most sought-after techniques wasn't as fruitful as some of you may have hoped, but in the end, you can't blame them, can you? Would you give all your trade secrets away to just anyone? Still the trio revealed to us that they do in fact run on PC, and also a combination of the following gear (included but not limited to): "Cubase 4, an M-audio axiom, a Jazzmutant Lemur, a Roland SH 201, an Access virus TI an Alesis Triggerpad, Adam s3as, Adam p22as, Adam sub 12 and a slew of plug-ins". Their fave plug-ins currently include Synth1 (free), the Kjaerhus Bundle and the built in Cubase distortions. A final and possibly a most important piece of advice: invest in good monitors.
By now, of course, we all know of the Vision label, as well as Division, Vision's sister imprint. This year, on Division 004, we're told to be on the lookout for two Hadouken! remixes coming ("Liquid Lives" b/w "Crank It Up"). There's also a forthcoming a single coming out on Ram in the near future ("My World" being the A-side, with the flip to be announced). And yes, the Noisia ALBUM is almost finished, and we're told it's a mix of a little bit of everything (yes, including DnB). They are very excited, which probably means we should be, too. Finally, we were told the boys have been "sneakily hatching some plans" that they will be telling us all about soon.
Last but not least, Noisia sends their apologies to their North American fans that were disappointed at the cancellation of their recent N.A. tour. When you're currently one of the most sought-after DnB acts in the world , things get hectic, and the mix up was due to a double booking on their part. They do hope to be back soon, however, and North American fans, as well as the rest of you, can check out the widget on their MySpace for any and all upcoming tour info. Holla.
