BOP
On the 27th of July, Hospital's Med School imprint released the forward-thinking Clear Your Mind album from Russian producer Bop. That title works two-fold: it puts you in the right frame of mind for approaching the album (no pre-conceived notions) as it helps reset the sound of the so-called bearded "chinstroke" crew. Dipping into all of the flavors of EDM (from dubstep to IDM to Drum & Bass), the album rides a subtle wave, with its rumbles and textures fitting into whatever BPM you cast upon them.
Bop's been getting picked up by a certain class of labels, including acclaimed imprints like Subtle Audio and Covert Operations, who play well with his minimal DnB tapestries. Hospital's Tony Colman picked up on the bits Bop had been sending over, highlighting them on the award-winning Hospital podcast and, as Bop told us, Med School started culling tracks for the album. While Bop might've written some of the tunes years ago, he tells us that "some of tunes are absolutely new, [while] some [of the tracks were] old projects I was correcting during the work on album". He initially looked to do a Drum & Bass album, but figured it made sense to throw some of the more downtempo tunes into the LP, which was the proper decision when you give the album (especially the CD version) a proper listen. And for you production heads, Bop only uses FL, a program he's used in the eight years he has been producing "'cause I haven't found any better".
While Bop had difficulty nailing down what drew him to Drum & Bass, after producing other genres, he does state that associating with the Russian DnB community, with the exchanging of different experiences within the genre, helps immensely. He's a man who believes that, within his album, any man can find their theme, and doesn't have a single favorite tune from the album - each tune holds a special place for varying reasons. His label, Microfunk, has launched it’s (currently in beta) website (microfunk.ru), and the free net-label counterpart, Microcircuit, has its 6th release on the way. We heard Bop's a vegan, and while he doesn't cook, he recommend "fried bananas with different syrups" for the vegan DOA crew, and wants you to know that the exclusive mix he did for the Dogs On Acid community features tracks from Clear Your Mind, as well as cuts from like-minded producers (and judging from the promo he's done in mix form, expect to hear some serious growers). He's doing the majority of his promo touring and such within Russia, but fans of his music should be able to find a lot of his mixes and other features via the Web. When asked about his goals within the music scene, Bop assured us that he plans on further experimenting with the sound, so don't get too comfortable... the man is sure to make you hit that reset button and clear your mind once again!
