DIGITAL + OUTRAGE
DOA: You both helped to spearhead the J-Tek movement over the past couple of years, but we have heard little collaborative output from you. When did you decide to work on an album together?
Outrage: I personally put about a year into helping the launch of the J-Tek project while I was living in Thailand, teaching music production and improving my own production skills. That was something I wanted to do before I made any more Drum & Bass as my motivation for producing it was low. I had reached some amazing goals but felt I could take things further with more production knowledge.
I have known Digital for nearly ten years, and he was someone who I looked up to and who helped me in my early production days. We decided to make an album last October when we started our first collaboration track ("Snowballs") over AIM. It's a straight up Drum & Bass Amen track, a sound we felt has been neglected for while. After that, we thought "why not just make a whole album with the type of music we want to listen to and play?"; the J-Tek project and this album have sent my motivation and hunger through the roof, and I am back on the beats harder than ever. And I think I can speak for both of us on that one.
DOA: Is there any significance behind the title, Red Letter?
Digital & Outrage: For us, the album represents the struggle and signs of the times today within music, finance, personal lives, Politics and more . We are sure many others can relate too...
Do you get at least one "Red Letter" or Final Demand bill through the door everyday?
Do you eat pasta and mince/Corn Beef at least 3 times a week?
Are you a Tesco value blue stripe / Sainsbury's salmon trimmings buyer?
Are you on Job Seekers allowance?
Have you had to start your own escort agency?
Are you stealing next doors wireless Internet connection?
Do you send 4000 + FREEEE text messages per month?
Do you put vinegar in the tomato sauce or water in the shampoo and shower gel when it runs low to get that little bit extra out?
Have you slept on a floor or sofa for the last ten months?
Does your mum keep asking you "when will you get a real job, and move out and become a responsible adult?"
If you have answered to at least two or more of these questions the title Red Letter might be significant to you...
DOA: What can people expect to hear from this LP - the more old school-leaning J-Tek sound, your signature dub-wise efforts or something else entirely?
Digital & Outrage: We have locked ourselves in the studio for ten months and not really listened to what has been going on in the scene. We have made what we want to hear and play in the clubs. You will hear a lot of freshness and variety but within our signature sound.
DOA: Aside from you guys, are any other producers or artists featured on this project?
Digital & Outrage: There is one track on the album called "Daydream" - that's a collaboration between us and Ghetto Child, who's from Chicago. He originally sent us the track as a solo effort and we really liked the track but felt we could help give it a complete sound. He has lots of great ideas and definitely one to watch in the future.
DOA: Will you guys be going on tour to support Red Letter?
Digital & Outrage: Yes; we will be hitting the UK, Europe and the US before the end of the year and into 2010, followed by a tour of Australasia and New Zealand.

DOA: Outrage, you've previously done some live PAs using Ableton Live, right? How has that been going? Why did you choose Ableton as your method of live performance?
Outrage: I haven't used Ableton Live for a while, but its something I will be pushing hard with a new format in 2010. Digital and I will also be doing a Red Letter LIVE tour. I chose Ableton when it first came out and I think I was one of the first to use it in a live DnB show in Amsterdam. It,s lots of fun and there is so much you can do with it to put on a good live performance. When I use Ableton Live, it,s strictly my own productions and live remixes to give it a unique edge. If I have a two hour set I like to do one hour DJ set and one Live to keep things interesting
DOA: The last time we spoke, Outrage, you were promoting Whisper Audio. Do you have any new news or info on that imprint?
Outrage: Yes, I have music lined up for Whisper Audio with partner and vocalist Kirsty Hawkshaw that you can expect to see surface mid 2010 with a possible remix of WA001's "Sunbathing" by Adam F. I also have three releases lined up for my Backlash Records imprint.
DOA: Digital, your last album was more of the collaborative nature as well - do you have plans to follow up the mighty Dubzilla with a solo album?
Digital: There's no solo album for now, as I'll be working on 2 projects with Outrage over the next 9 months - a Drum & Bass album and a J-Tek Album.
DOA: Speaking of which, your J-Tek movement exploded when you started feeding those classic sounds to the public. Why do you guys think the sound grew so quickly?
Digital & Outrage: The Jungle Tekno sound was short lived due to the split in the scene into Jungle and Hardcore. There are still many Old Skool Jungle Tekno events happening around the UK and in Europe and have been for the past 15 years, with the same great tunes being played. Most people are glad that there is new music being made holding those same vibes. All of us behind it are very passionate about that sound and want to bring it back with a fresh look with today’s quality and production. It had all the energy and vibes that Drum & Bass has now, but at a tempo more people could get their heads around and dance to. There aren’t many dance music genres that can create that same dance floor energy at 140 to 150 BPM.
DOA: What's next for the J-Tek label on the release side?
Outrage: We have just had our 11th release, which was a four track remix EP of mine and Digital's "Made In England" and Secret Society's "Listen". We gave that to the public to have a bash at with the chance to win a release on the J-Tek label. We had a great response and received some really good music, which helped us discover new artists and a whole bunch of J-Tek labels have been launched. You can also expect to hear some brand new Outrage & Modular, Tango & Outrage, and Digital & Outrage on the label as well as a mixed artist compilation SOOON!!
DOA: Digital, what's next for your Function imprint?
Digital: Function #30 (Cabbie & Papa Gee's "Beer & Pussy" b/w Theory's "Warning") is set to drop on 7 September 2009, followed by Amit & Outrage's "Reclaim The Symbol" b/w their remix of my tune "Dirty Money" (Function #31). There will also be a special repress 12" (Digital "Waterhouse Dub" b/w Concord Dawn's "Tonite (Pendulum Remix)") to drop in october, followed by Red Letter (CHANEL9604LP).
DOA: You guys dropped a mix for us, right? What can the people expect to hear?

DOA: Before we get out of here, do you guys have any final thoughts or shouts?
