EMALKAY
DOA: Let's get right into this; how long have you been producing music?
Emalkay: About 12 years now... damn that's a really long time, come to think of it.
DOA: When did you get into dubstep, and what about that sound made you want to start producing dubstep tunes?
Emalkay: Dubstep sort of found me to be honest. I come from a garage/grime background, but the kind of grime I was making could have passed for dubstep. I made a track called "Gut Feeling" in 2006 that was snapped up by Boka, a well established dubstep label. So yeah, all of a sudden I was a dubstep producer!
DOA: How would you describe your sound?
Emalkay: You'll always find [that] the beats will be pretty hard, not too aggressive but always pretty solid with a bassline to match, even with the more "mellow" tunes; I hate weak beats. Everything else changes with each track, depending what mood I'm in. It's an ongoing process though, I never feel inclined to keep things as they are.
DOA: Now, you've been championed by selectors like Plastician, Benga, Mary Anne Hobbs and many more, as one of the leading producers of "heavier" dubstep. When would you say that you noticed your tunes were getting more recognition?
Emalkay: When "Explicit" was released on Dub Police in Feb. this year. Things stepped up big time. I think it was the overall attitude of the track that appealed to people, sent the ravers nuts, still does!
DOA: Do you have any favorite tunes in your back catalogue?
Emalkay: Yeah: "Mecha" and also "Sector 187", which is a rare track I put out in '04, good luck finding it!
DOA: Dub Police recently put out the massive "When I Look At You"; what do you think about this tune has such instant appeal?
Emalkay: I think maybe because it's got a bit of everything in there: the intro is like some sort of ballad gone wrong, the build-up is almost like a trance tune and the drop works just like a Drum & Bass track... but the beats are dubstep.
DOA: What's next up for you, release-wise?
Emalkay: The Storming Productions label is re-launching with two tracks from me ("Solid State" and "Battle Suit") which should be out soon, before the end of the year. I've also got a remix of BBE's "Seven Days and One Week", which is an old percy of mine, coming out very soon, it's out on digital already I think.
DOA: While we've covered some dubstep movements, mostly with DnB producers who've embraced the sound, I believe this is the first full-on dubstep mix that Dogs On Acid has put out. What's your take on the connections (or lack thereof) between DnB and dubstep?
Emalkay: They are both a lot more connected now, which is good I think. You're getting both scenes taking influences from each other musically, which doesn't always work but when done right can be very effective. You only have to look at collaborations with people like Skream and dBridge for example, all good positive movements.
DOA: Can we get a current top 10 from you?

Emalkay: I need to chill, so I'll play some Wii with the missus, walk the dog, go pub, eat curry, the usual stuff - nothing too dramatic going on in my life at the moment.
DOA: Do you have any shouts or final thoughts before we delve into this mix?
Emalkay: Yea I need big up my girlfriend Lou first, I don't know how she puts up with me. Caspa, Gary J, D-Code, all Dub Police famo, the mother, the father, the brother and not forgetting the pub crew.
