ATP – ENERGY CURRENCY - VIBRATION
Energy Currency is hands down Liquid Funk overall but the kind of Liquid Funk that we love in the ways that it doesn’t fall victim some of the stereotypical elements that, in our opinion, can make this a much misunderstood sub-genre , specifically for listeners who maybe like things a little heavier. The range on the whole for this album is impressive not only due to varying tempos/genres executed but also thanks to the consistency of ATP’s production work which maintains that Liquid vibe while still having noticeable variance from track to track. Bouncing from tune to tune , things go from more minimal opening set type vibe to delightfully deeper and perfect for a prime time slot with a full range of drum kits spanning light and snappy to more aggressive and full with hard hitting kick drums complimented by punchy snares. You’re definitely going to want to check out ‘My Hero’, which combines a simple vocal snip, big pads throughout and aforementioned punching snares, while ‘Bitter Sweet’ focuses on airy piano, lighter drums and simple, low end sub bass. ‘Noiceception’ is almost some sort of midway hybrid between the two mentioned above, while ‘Be Mine’, which was also on the Vibration Therapy EP, is simply Liquid Funk standard and just that, funky . Honorable mention also goes to ‘Corner Boys’. All in all, each tune is solid and though the nature of albums will always be that some tracks stand out more than others, for a freshman album on a fairly new label the only thing Energy Currency is lacking is a surplus of let’s-just-toss-this-tune-on-to-beef-up-quantity type material. What else do you have up your sleeve for 2010, Vibration? Our curiosity has been more than sparked.
