CAMO & KROOKED – EDGE OF MIND EP – BETA
To top it off, on a side note, after having the chance to catch them DJ at a local event, these two have the DJ skills to boot making them a pretty fierce team with great potential for longevity in the world of Drum & Bass. Going back to the Edge of Mind EP, Camo & Krooked have a successful formula in terms of their production work currently and they are doing the wise move, in our opinion, and sticking to it. That’s not to say we don’t love diversity, but strategically if you have a good thing going for you musically that results in strong tracks that are well received and continually gaining you more recognition it makes sense to stay on that path, for the time being anyways. ‘Skyline’ has the characteristic that we find most unique and appealing of this duo which, if you have been paying attention to their work, you have surely heard: the pseudo, almost 4/4 (but not!) drum sequencing that eliminates the ghost snare of a break beat in pretty much 99% of DnB tracks. Unlike other producers that experiment with it however, it doesn’t end up coming off all Rotterdam, especially because of the tracks use of dreamy pads and sing song, though not goofy, bass line. ‘Mindset’ and ‘Time is Ticking Away’, which features vocalist Shaz Sparks, have noticeable similarities in terms of not only the synth sounds but the manner in which they are sequenced and the overall arrangement but at the same time are completely different tracks and not only just cause of the vocal on one either. ‘Mindset’, while sharing the previously mentioned 4/4 type drum work, has heavy and obviously emphasis on background percussion. ‘Time is Ticking Away’ is everything you would expect from a Camo & Krooked track minus the hard hitting, trademark drums which have been switched up for a surprisingly minimal kit. The DJ in us has to say that we predict ambitious DJs out there doing interesting things with this track by ways of dropping in non vocal bangers with huge drums and massive bass lines over top. Huge. Finally, what’s a Beta release without a remix of label head (and Drum & Bass ambassador for all things ‘kooky’) John B? The remix of ‘Numbers’ has all the definitive elements of any Camo & Krooked tune with great continual build ups that will be completely devastating to any dance floor. If Camo & Krooked are your thing, this is one worthwhile purchase worth every penny because each tune tight.
