XILENT - 'DISLOCATION'/'KILLING SPREE' - BETA
Xilent is a name that is new to us but we love a good mystery, especially when it comes to new producers, and some quick internet detective work yielded good results. With releases already out on labels such as Ammunition Recordings, Shadow Forces and Apparition Recordings, Polish born Xilent (now relocated to the UK according to his myspace) has a production style is nothing short of rugged and nasty, but in the best possible way. His newest is on Beta and don’t let the standard breakbeat/pad pairing through the intro of ‘Dislocation’ fool you, because when this one drops, it drops hard and broken with a heavy helping of change ups that are as much sporadic as they are well organized and calculated. We assure you, this one is in no way for the faint of heart so if you can’t handle the Drum & Bass side things that comes at you aggressive and threatening, you had better sit on the bench for this one, kid. ‘Killing Spree’, though still overtly forceful, is toned down somewhat specifically thanks to the backseat synth sound which adds the necessary depth and feeling to the tune to avoid it from sounding like cut and paste, cookie cutter Neurofunk. Still, it’s backseat as we said, and remains a more of a compliment to the strong, grinding bass lead. Hard hitting drums and a much adored half time breakdown finish this one of nicely. In short, a quality release for an up and comer on a top tier label and one more name to add to the already burgeoning list of producers to watch out for this year.
