ROCKWELL – NOIR EP – CRITICAL
If there’s one thing we can say that Rockwell has going in his favor it’s that of an extremely unique, signature production style. All 4 tracks on this EP are consistent thanks to their darker ambiance, cut up drums and ‘glitch&bass’ elements but – and this is key – they manage to avoid that all too familiar problem of sounding indistinguishable and redundant, an issue that that can result from a producer focusing on a very niche sound. Don’t let the light drums of ‘Keep Calm’ fool you, this one is all about constant, deep low end bass with a steady, moody groove and selectively placed, short sweeps, some of which take you up while others take you down. Zero Tolerance jumps on board for ‘Bone Structure’ and the only thing more surprising than this unlikely (to us, at least) collaboration is how unlike Zero Tolerance the resulting track is. Don’t get it twisted, you can hear his influence through the deviation of the various bass sounds compared to the other tracks, but this isn’t the Zero Tolerance we are used to hearing and to us that’s what makes a good collab – two producers joining forces and the result being a combination of their best assets. ‘Noir V.9’ stays in line with the EPs stripped down approach, yet is still brimming with aggression thanks to tough, cut up drums and an awesome selection of varying bass sounds. Solid proof that you don’t need layers upon layers to be heavy and rough. Lastly, the focus on a wide range of great percussion and simple yet suitable atmospheric elements make up a track that, upon hearing the name, is perfectly fitting of the name ‘Tribes’. Be ambitious and check it out, you may be surprised how much you dig it.
