YOUNG AX PRESENTS SUGAPHONIC, ROUND 2
Last summer, we introduced you to Young Ax's Sugaphonic imprint, which he started with the one and only Santorin camp. Ax has been known to bring some refreshing Jungle and DnB vibes to the scene, heavy with melodies and jazzy appeal alongside some tough, tough breaks. SUGA001 was heavily rinsed within DOA HQ, and from the sounds of the recently-released SUGA002 ("The Foundation" b/w "Something Like This", with "Breakaway" being MP3-only), he's onto something.
Kicking things off with "The Foundation", it definitely sounds like Young Ax's DnB start is drenched in mid-'90s washes of 1 part Soul, 2 parts fat beats and bass. This has been a tune that's been championed on dubplate for ages, so its good to finally get it on vinyl. "Something Like This" is cool and calm with more toned down vibes, really letting the musicality of Ax's repertoire breathe. Gives off a feeling of a summertime rave in 1996. The MP3 exclusive, "Breakaway", is a huge expression of beat-making at its finest. Perfect way to end your sets on a massive note, and with the cymbal crashes, it sounds like it'd be a treat to rock on a number of dancefloors!
