Get ready... because the legendary Slammer of Gravesend returns! The weekly nightspot that put South-East England on the map is back for a night of old school dance anthems spanning late 80's to early 90's this Easter!

Initially conceived by Colin Ross as a small meet-up hiring out a single room at the H20 Bar (former location of The Slammer), interest in the reunion rapidly grew and the surrounding buzz increased so much that, along with Lisa Ross-Mires & Jamie Batchelor, a full scale event was decided forming Crooked Halo Promotions in the process.

"This is a rave by ravers" enthuses Colin, himself an old regular of The Slammer. With a policy of no MC's or VIP entry on the night, and a pledge taken to donate all proceeds to charity, Return To The Slammer! looks set to be one of the most important events of this year.

The Slammer was originally founded in 1986 by Eddie Gordon, the highly respected major figure of the UK music industry, as a monthly event at The Red Lion pub in an industrial area of Gravesend. In conjunction with landlord Terry Lee, a formula was forged that would bring the emerging sounds of US House & Hip Hop to the fore, with the provision of a basement catering for the established jazz & rare groove scene. Early DJ's involved were such names as Paul Oakenfold, Nicky Holloway, Pete Tong, CJ Mackintosh, Tim Westwood, Gilles Peterson & Norman Jay, names that would later go on to become synonymous with the music forms they played.

With the following for the monthly nights ever-growing a need was felt to relocate to a weekly venue, and in 1989 The Slammer moved half a mile to the H20 Bar (formerly The Soul Bowl) on the High Street. With the times and the inception of UK developed genres, so The Slammer began to incorporate rave and hardcore to its repertoire, attracting such DJ's as Micky Finn, Slipmatt, Colin Dale, Grooverider & John Digweed. Playing a large part of dance history in South-East England, The Slammer attracted regulars from right across Kent and surrounding counties, and remained a weekly fixture of Gravesend until 1993.

Return To The Slammer! pays tribute to all of these eras, taking you back to the birth place of The Slammer, with a distinctive flyer harking back to the very first flyer ever used. The event features two main rooms: the main floor catering for those older, progressive club sounds of the late 80's and the downstairs taking into the scenes of hardcore & early drum'n'bass. The addition of a third area gives opportunity to pay homage to that original Slammer sound with hip hop & rare groove. The venue itself boasts an outside smoking area, no sound restrictions and a relaxed dress code.

Endorsed with the full blessings of both Terry Lee & Eddie Gordon, who has endorsed the project with an exclusive written history of The Slammer (read here) and a press release (view here, .PDF) in support of the event. Crooked Halo Productions have even gone as far as to locate the original backdrops from the early events, and involvement from original Slammer DJ's Maggot, Dave Shirley, Russ B, DJ Rumble, Matt Howse, Dion Austin & Jess.

Support for this event has been phenomenal, and with over 130 tickets sold before tickets went on general sale on the 9th Feb, Return To The Slammer! promises to be a roof-raising occasion. Tickets to the event are £12 in advance and £20 on the door, however with tickets selling out fast you are advised to book now to avoid disappointment!
