Wanted to make a thread about Gimp for some time now.
For those who dont know: its an open source, free graphics manipulation program, like photoshop.

I´ve been learning picture manipulation for about a year now. I used PAINT.NET at first and then switched over to Gimp.
Theres a lot to learn: layers, masks, selection tools, file formats but i love it so far and im good at self educating.

Used Gimp especially for making youtube videos, so we can talk about DnB on DOA, but also edit my bought mp3 artwork a lot, so i can have pretty pictures in my foobar music player.

    Anybody else using GIMP ?

Oh and, in before photoshop is better (it probably is, but im poor).

That's almost on par with winterman's efforts.

    Do you know Photoshop?

I'd be interested to see how it stacks up against that. I use PS almost daily and GIMP would need to be pretty tasty to tear me away from what I already know.

No i dont. Why would you want to change ?
In my opinion Gimp is a program for amateurs, if you have access to PS, you can do a ton more and some of it much easier.

Gimp is free, PS is not - thats the only advantage.

I reckon the majority of people here who use PS at home didn't pay for it

I use GIMP because my laptop is a piece of shit (700mhz cpu / 256mb ram) and can't run photoshop.

It's damn good. Takes a while to learn but belting for free. Almost on par with PS.

yeah probably, i never figured out how to get a cracked version

well whatever it is, i think Winterman is not bad with photoshop... its more his style and/or attitude, that lacks, but thats another story

also the example i posted was just a tutorial i recreated last night
i know it looks tacky and is probably not a good example to "promote" Gimp

Been using gimp for years. I seldom do anything complicated with it. In fact I mostly use it to make minor edits to figures or to convert postscripts to other formats and vice versa.
Whenever I do have to do something involving layers, I find the interface pretty awkward and the whole experience ends up being frustrating. I know if I was experienced it would be powerful, but it's a bit shit for quick and easy shopping.
It is, however, free (and on linux).

does it now have CYMK support at last? (its only disadvantage has been the lack thereof)

the new version has a unified window layout, if thats what bothered you (personally i like the split three window interface better)

on the bad side, now you have to export pictures to change the file format

its true, there is much to learn, but that would be the same with PS

Probably. Truth is I don't have enough regular need for graphic design/photoshopping to ever become proficient with any of these programs.

I don't mind the three window thing. By the layering I meant, for example, I go highlight and drag something only to find I'm on the wrong layer and have to remember how to switch layers. In other words, something that should take 30 seconds ends up taking 15 minutes.
