Really interested to see how many people are using Live.

I'm not sure what the "industry standard" DAW is these days for DnB (defo used to be Cubase when i was making it) but these days in many other genres Ableton is the standard.

Keen to learn and share some Ableton based tips and tricks if anyone else is?

I use Reason, but I've been dabbling with Ableton recently. Always down to learn some tips if anyone has anything to share!

I went your route, i started rewiring reason into ableton, but soon realised that there was just no need to use reason any more. I always rewired reason into cubase because reason was great for getting fresh ideas out but the audio engine was always....well.....quite reasony.

Once you learn the workflow for ableton you'll realise that it has the power and sound of a top end DAW but still retains the creative flow that reason has.

Have you used Operator much? My love for Ableton blossomed once i realised how fucking excellent it is!!

One very cool (and I think often overlooked) thing about operator is the envelopes can be retriggered by beats or time, effectively making them into complex lfos. very cool for evolving pads and arp-y lead type stuff.

That sounds awesome! Can't really get my head around what effect that would get though, i'll have to have a little play.

We should totally use this thread to sling up some interesting racks we make.

One thing i use on most instruments is the filter delay.

To give an element some space in the mix, take a filter delay and put it on time rather than sync, then just give one channel a slight delay of just a few milliseconds than the other, it's great for bass lines if you split the mids/tops from the low end to keep the weight but spread out the rest in the mix. I like to turn off the actual filter on it as it changes the sound of the bass, but you can also use the BP to fuck about with it further.

I've never really learnt how to mix with it, a load of people swear by it though.

    How did you learn?

There's a tutorial in the live help, it's really easy, only complaint is that you really have to know how your tracks are pitched. I don't have a pre-EQ and you have to import a tune so you can find the BPM, which takes some time to build a set.

I also, got a Trigger Finger Midi and started using it recently as a kontroller. Made my own MIDI template for it which is kind of cool. I am using a PC laptop so it's not the best system to run multi-track ableton projects with MIDI cues.

Envelope Follower in M4L is great.
You can take any audio and use it as source and assign it to anything.
Say, you have a kick track – you insert Envelope Follower on that track and map the signal to an EQ on a bass track and make it duck the freq on the kick.
    And loads of creative stuff.

Exactly on all counts. My subbass go-to almost always is operator, often just with a dist plug like NI Driver then lowpassed.. and that's just off the plain sine /single operator. Combine and add drips of each operator and mind = blown

If you're doing sub with Operator, make sure you whack on the pitch envelope to max, whack the peak up a couple of octaves then give it a quick decay. It'll give it a lovely punchy pang!

i just want to court some opinion.

i can get the standard version of ableton live for about £170 with an educational license. is suite so much better that i would really want to wait to spend a hundred odd more on it or could i buy standard sooner and upgrade it later when i have the beans? i have reason 7 and zebra 2 so things like operator are nice things i could maybe buy later.

i dug an old copy of lite 8 out so i'm having a play with it to see if i like it.

You miss out on operator and analog amongst other instruments, which are a big plus point for suite imo

anything in the way of effects or metadevices that's essential? i've heard there's a signal follower thing in max that's supposed to be da bomb.
