This one is very popular on beatport. It's not the kind of music i typically go for but i feel like my tastes may be opening up in this direction. The offbeat string/synth lead that comes in around 4:30 really does it for me.

I've only started listening to a bit of it recently, the line between deep house/ techno is a fine one imo, some great music around, like this one, more traditional house sound,

I think the huge problem is the term 'deep house' got twisted when Disclosure et al made it big. So people started thinking any house that wasn't a Swedish House Mafia screechathon was 'deep house'. No disrespect to Mack10zy but those tunes have nothing to do with deep house in the original sense of the term.

That Kempt tune is lovely though, definitely in the right place.

Agreed, the Mack10zy posted tunes definitely don't tally with what i understand to be deep house. But I've also read that the term has been widened over recent years to include stuff like that, so i'm sure he's not wrong.
    It's like the term Rnb.

maybe the genre expanded, you are probably correct though, I'd look to stay on the border of techno music, I think they can get too much camp singing and pianos in, I'd say mack10zy i more on the jackin electro side, needs more definition.

    ???

Not sure about it having expanded or widened...I mean the name 'deep house' itself should be enough of a clue as to what it should sound like.

It just seems to me like the phrase got jacked by mainstream EDM press and applied to music that has nothing to do with what Larry Heard, Ron Trent etc started.

no, your right, fidget house and edm have no place under the deep house umbrella, that's sacrelidge, even I can see that, if you ain't using a rotary mixer like those guys were you ain't deep housing.

Hey sorry, I didn't mean to come off like a dick about it. But to anyone who has been into the genre for a while, it is weird seeing the name applied to tunes that don't really fit. Like I said, nothing against the actual tunes being posted here, which are decent enough whatever you want to call them.

I think when they sell dance compilations to the mainstream (service station or airport browsing) crowd, they often swipe a genre name that sounds familiar enough, but makes the compilation sound more interesting than 'Dance Hits Vol. 52' .. and sometimes it sticks..

The term "deep house" has been corrupted for sure. Who is to say what proper deep house is beyond Prescription Records?

yep we only really need to check out beatport's examples of such eg deep or tech house listings to see that these genres or peoples classification of music has shifted greatly from what we grew up with. cringey lol.

It happened to me when I heard the new electro sound 7 or so years ago. I couldn't believe people were calling it electro.

But you can't really combat it or you'll become something between /r/gatekeeping and /r/lewronggeneration.

yeah electro house back in teh day that guys like tiefschwarz were doing was awesome, and of couse the earlier electro breakbeat sounds.. actually cool stuff - then it was all of a sudden edm..

definitely dont want genres stuck in their ways, but it's a stretch to call some of these tunes deep /techy etc
