Does anyone who uses Reason really have a shot at making anything great?

I can't see why it should stop people making good composition, but I worry that the sound engine isn't good enough. Things just never sound crystal clear like I hear on some recordings and it does seem to have its own `sound` and it doesn't seem great. I also don't like the reverb that comes with it. I still have quite a bit of love for it it's cheap and easy to use

i think the recent reason engine is fine, i think it might be their effects that are a bit shit.

Sound engine argument doesn't apply anymore. All daws are as good as each other now.

apparently Liam Howlett uses (used to use?) Reason to make some sounds for the Prodigy stuff. don't think he made everything in it but at least a few bit and bobs. saw an interview a long time ago where he mentioned that.

anyway if you are at all worried about Reason, Bitwig studio is fucken A+ and it's pretty cheap too. Free demo to download, and the full version is only around US$300 i think.

Commix used Reason as well but I think a lot of people were rewiring Reason with Cubase to do the mixdown.

A few people on here use Reaper, I think that's worth checking out. @luthatron uses it.

Yeah, 0 difference between DAW's sound quality-wise. And the effects in Reason are pretty damn good imo. There is no "reason sound" unless you use the presets that come with the synths, or the standard samples. (and even then, who the hell cares if you make a good tune)

Reason gets out of sync, if you use many parallel and feedback chains.
You have to bounce each steam, then do the final mixdown.
It's not a big deal, other popular daws like Live and Fl still have similar problems.

Apologies for bumping my tune, but this is probably the best tune ive made in Reason. Watched a wicked tutorial on making bass which has really opened my eyes to what you can do with a bit of rewiring round the back.

It's sick but it's also really grey and uninspiring and comes with no sounds and only a handful or plugins. If you have lots of plugins and don't need fun bright colours it's amazing.

reaper? I'm using it right now.

(I was talking about reaper not reason)

I ditched reason about 3.5 or so when it started to get bloated, seems it went from a really fun place to make sounds to requiring too many button clicks, but I didn't persevere and could be totally wrong.

i think that reason has come a long way since they've started to code other peoples software to work with it but it's far from my go to place unless i really have too

Yeah I'm sure, but the thing I liked about it was it was really simple, fast, and self contained.

Now it seems a lot more complicated with more going on.

I guess I kind of replaced it with Maschine for a simple programme to use.

Claude Von Stroke Who's afraid of detroit was written completely in reason and you still can't escape dj's dropping it so I think it's ok to use it.

it's not about the equipment or tools. It's about being creative, working hard and being prepared to fail 100 times before you create something 'great.'

I feel like introducing the ability for companies to produce rack devices for it was the wrong move. Reasons strengths are in how closed of an environment it is. The design of the devices is close to how you use hardware. They should have updated the devices already present instead and added a good FM and additive synth. The original effects where ok for 2002 but are still there. Personally, I feel they should have researched the analog synth trend and worked closely with hardware companies to develop an interface protocol that could easily integrate with the reason architecture. Imagine if you could just have your microbrute plugged in through usb and drop it in like any other rack instrument. This all may seem like it would be difficult to develop but it would have been more worth the time than whatever the hell went on with record and rack extensions.
