I think the problem is the tune isn't really a collective effort – it's like the guy at middle school who invited people round so they could watch him play N64 .. "Can I have a go?" "Thing is I've only got the one controller." .. We all knew that guy.

This is why you want to do the doubling method .. Everyone write a bar .. Vote on the best bar .. Everyone download the project (or wav if easier) and double it .. Everyone vote on the best 2 bars, etc. Repeat. True design by committee.

Doos pulled a Leroy Jenkins on us. But he did manage to make some cool stuff tho.
Isn't it a better idea we have more general consensus before we start uploading stems?
Like BPM, key and so on? Maybe we need a voting system (like Google Forms) of some sorts.

Surprised to hear you're using standard pink noise tuning mate. Don't forget to tune it down to 432hz - you should be able to achieve that by ear - otherwise all your mix decisions will be off and it'll create crippling migraines in your listeners.

you want that pink noise just a shade darker than pink. I'm colourblind so it's hard to call.

Bubblegum would go well with 432hz

Thats a cool idea. I'm gonna try it, thanks.
Confused what you mean from the middle out though. Does this idea not mean starting at the start of the tune? And keep adding as opposed to copy&pasting?

You're not really writing from anywhere .. If you think about it, your 1st bar is just a drum loop .. By 8 bars, you might have an 8-bar pad loop .. When you double up again to 16 bars, you might want to chop the pads out of the first 8 bars.

So although you shouldn't think of it sequentially, going from 8 bars to 16, you might have written the 2nd half of the 16 bar loop first.

What you tend to find is the 4, 8 or 16 bar loop you come up with is pretty much the tune in full swing .. You're mostly adding when you start .. When you get to 128 bars, that might be when you start taking things out and building more structure .. But never think of it as a full tune in progress – only think as far as the number of bars you've got to work with .. What makes the technique so useful is that at every stage of the way you're listening and asking "What feels right?" .. So you're working very consciously, and developing the ability to conceptualise music .. Which is basically what separates great musicians from those who paint by numbers.

I personally go with a nice shade of taffy for more neuro-y tracks.
(It's the first one in the bottom row in case you can't see it mate)

I'll be honest, the 432hz thing doomed the project from the start.

It's hard enough to organise things, but asking everyone to use anti-Illuminati tuning is a barrier to entry.

If there was any evidence 432hz sounded better, we'd all just pitch records down slightly – someone would have noticed it sounded better.

It doesn't because sound as a physical phenomenon and a perceptual phenomenon are two different things.

Interesting. So you're just trying to make to make a good 32 bar say, without thinking about what comes next. Then copy and paste it to 64 and look at it anew...now try and make those 64 bars interesting and evolve (which may involve editing the original 32).

Pretty helpful, Im gonna try it.

I wonder how some guys do it, when they've got these great switch ups in the tune that completely bring the track into a new direction (recent output in dnb from Fracture, Sam Binga, Richie Brains, Sully ....Paradox with his breaks etc). I wonder if they treat it like djing and have different projects with different ideas and try splicing them together...or taking your idea - when they double up on the bars, they cut out the second half and just leave the kick drum going and start again...

Yeah, just focus on making the best 32, 64, etc bars you can.

The intro and outro can be added once you've finished. I think most producers start from the middle (where the tune's in full swing), then fit that around an arrangement.

Everyone knows that drum and bass is best pitched up as far as you can on 1210's or CDJ's just look at where the pitch is by the end of any gig.

    @Doos

as well intentioned as you are this whole idea/post has fallen into a really shit place right now from what was originally a kinda sound concept and positive idea towards the music production community.............however ........ it is like you got some attention with the idea .. then rambled on like you were on amphetamines with all kinds of ideas and posts which would of put off anyone remotely interested and Ray has summed it up, you are that kid on the Nintendo showing us all and giving nobody a go and when we do you just can't wait to get that controller back and we are all sat there smoking all your weed and flirting with your older sister right now
